General procedure: K2CO3 (3a, 210 mg, 1.5 mmol) was added to a solution of b-ketoesters 5a-c (0.5 mmol) in acetone (10 mL) at 25 C. The reaction mixture was cooled to 25 C and the solvent was concentrated. The residue was diluted with water (10 mL) and the mixture was extracted with CH2Cl2 (320 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried, filtered and evaporated to afford crude product. Purification on silica gel (hexanes/EtOAc20/1e10/1) afforded 6a-c.
