Influence of surface hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of biochar on the removal of emerging contaminants

This study investigated the removal of Acetaminophen (ACT) using biochars having different physicochemical characteristics. Biochars subjected to post-pyrolysis heat-treatment at 300 degrees C for different treatment times (0, 3.5, 8 and 24 h) were used. The resulting biochars were characterized using FTIR and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Experiments for ACT adsorption with different biochars loads (0.0, 0.05, 1, and 2 g L-1) were performed. Using the best performing material, ACT adsorption was investigated for additional biochar loads (4.0, and 6.0 g L-1) and experiments to test the effect of ionic strength were undertaken for different ions (chloride, carbonate, and nitrate) at three different concentrations (0.0, 1.0, 5.0 mM). The results showed that the changes to the surface of the thermally treated biochars increased the adsorption of ACT. The changes in the amount of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of the modified biochars (e.g., C=O from 47.8 a.u. to 152 a.u. in the untreated and thermally treated biochars, respectively), as well as modifications to their crystalline structure are considered to be the reason for the observed improvement. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic models suggest the generation of an adsorbate monolayer and chemisorption as the rate-limiting step. The different anions tested were found to have a significant influence on ACT adsorption, related to their electronegativity and steric effect, as confirmed by the multivariate analysis.

Investigation of choline chloride-formic acid pretreatment and Tween 80 to enhance sugarcane bagasse enzymatic hydrolysis

Purpose To reduce the need for invasive and expensive measures of human biomarkers, sweat is becoming increasingly popular in use as an alternative to blood. Therefore, the (in)dependency of blood and sweat composition has to be explored. Methods In an environmental chamber (33 degrees C, 65% relative humidity; RH), 12 participants completed three subsequent 20-min cycling stages to elicit three different local sweat rates (LSR) while aiming to limit changes in blood composition: at 60% of their maximum heart rate (HRmax), 70% HRmax and 80% HRmax, with 5 min of seated-rest in between. Sweat was collected from the arm and back during each stage and post-exercise. Blood was drawn from a superficial antecubital vein in the middle of each stage. Concentrations of sodium, chloride, potassium, ammonia, lactate and glucose were determined in blood plasma and sweat. Results With increasing exercise intensity, LSR, sweat sodium, chloride and glucose concentrations increased (P <= 0.026), while simultaneously limited changes in blood composition were elicited for these components (P >= 0.093). Sweat potassium, lactate and ammonia concentrations decreased (P <= 0.006), while blood potassium decreased (P = 0.003), and blood ammonia and lactate concentrations increased with higher exercise intensities (P = 0.005; P = 0.007, respectively). The vast majority of correlations between blood and sweat parameters were non-significant (P > 0.05), with few exceptions. Conclusion The data suggest that sweat composition is at least partly independent of blood composition. This has important consequences when targeting sweat as non-invasive alternative for blood measurements.

Effect of silane treated fly ash on physico-mechanical, morphological, and thermal properties of recycled poly(vinyl chloride) composites

The silane treatment on properties of fly ash (FA) and development of its composite using recycled poly(vinyl chloride) (r-PVC) material retrieve from waste wires and cable insulation are investigated in this work. Primary analysis of r-PVC and FA was employed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The thermal stability of composites was stable up to 187 degrees C. In addition, significant enhancement on tensile strength as well as young’s modulus of composite as compared to untreated r-PVC/FA composites. Morphological properties of silane treated FA based composites presented the good distribution and excellent uniformity with higher wettability of FA particles within r-PVC matrix. The water absorption test showed decrease in water absorption with increase silane treatment concentration FA in the r-PVC matrix. It was remarkable to note that silane treated FA can be prepared as a composite using r-PVC matrix with further modified properties.

Development of high temperature shape memory polymers with fast response time and recyclable performance is highly desired. In this study, a new semi-aromatic tri-amine (TRIA) containing thioether unit is prepared through the reaction of trifluoro-monomer and p-mercaptoaniline (p-MA). It is conducted to polymerize with 4,4′-thiodibenzoyl chloride (TDC) and different ratios of diamine (both of them contained flexible thioether group) to supply a series of slightly crosslinking semi-aromatic polyamide. It is found that the resultant polymers had excellent thermal properties (T-g, 237.9-245.8 degrees C, T-d, 430.9-436.5 degrees C) and mechanical properties (tensile strength, 74-100 MPa). Because of the introduction of the large amount of flexible thioether group, the resultant polyamides can be dissolved in some aprotic solvents, and can be processed with solution method to fabricate a series of fast-responsive shape memory film (SMF) with a responsive time of 6-8 s, recovery rate of 98-99.5% after 20 cycles. What’s more, the oxidized film can even lift a weight equal to about 2-3 times (vertical direction) and 5-8 times (horizontal direction) of its own weight. Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors and oxidant stressors, and exposure has been associated with premature birth, asthma, obesity, insulin resistance and endometriosis. We evaluated the presence of 16 phthalate metabolites in third trimester pregnant women in three rural communities near the largest lake in Mexico, Lake Chapala, by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry in 90 urine samples. Phthalate metabolites were found in all samples, where the highest concentration was 1830 ng/mL in mono-ethyl phthalate (mEP), and it was present in 98.9% of all samples.
