This result indicates that PVC can be completely decomposed by these solvents in the presence of oxygen. It was also determined that AlCl3-induced tissue injury was significantly prevented by ESC co-treatment.

The poor robustness and durability of superhydrophobic surfaces under various externally imposed stresses have become a challenging issue for practical applications. Here, an efficient dissolution and modification strategy is proposed for facilely fabricating superhydrophobic polyethylene (F-PE/SiO2) foam with 98.6% porosity using sodium chloride (NaCl) as a sacrificial template and superhydrophobic nano-silica particles as a surface chemical modifier. Graphene quantum dot (GQD), fluorescent under ultra-violet (UV) light, can be easily synthesized and used as a mercury ion detection probe because the brightness of GQD’s fluorescence decreases with the increase of the number of mercury ions. We developed a facile mercury (II) ion quantification method using GQD coated filter paper disks in a 3D-printed well array. Changes of GQD’s fluorescent brightness dependent on mercury ion concentration were measured via optical microscopy image processing. We also observed the dependency of mercury ion detection sensitivity on the amount of GQD and type of GQDs. Our approach may be easily adapted for hand-held mobile mercury ion quantification devices in the future due to its simplicity and small sample size.

Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) is one of the widely consumed vegetables. To investigate the mechanism underlying the anti-allergic responses of asparagus, we extracted different fractions from asparagus and measured their inhibitory effects on beta-hexosaminidase release in RBL-2H3 cells in vitro and an atopic dermatitis NC/Nga mouse model in vivo. The lipid fractions from asparagus were extracted with 50% ethanol, separated using chloroform by liquid-liquid phase separation, and fractionated by solid-phase extraction. Among them, acetone fraction (rich in glycolipid) and MeOH fraction (rich in phospholipid) markedly inhibited beta-hexosaminidase release from RBL-2H3 cells. In NC/Nga mice treated with picryl chloride, atopic dermatitis was alleviated following exposure to the 50% EtOH extract, acetone fraction, and methanol fraction. The inhibitory effects of asparagus fractions in vivo were supported by the significant decrease in serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. The phospholipid fractions showed significantly better inhibitory effects, and phosphatidic acid from this fraction showed the best inhibitory effect on beta-hexosaminidase release. In mice challenged with ovalbu min (OVA), oral administration of asparagus extract and its fractions decreased the OVA-specific IgE level and total IgE, indicating that these effects may be partly mediated through the downregulation of antigen-specific IgE production. Taken together, the present study shows for the first time that asparagus extract and its lipid fractions could potentially mitigate allergic reactions by decreasing degranulation in granulocytes. Our study provides useful information to develop nutraceuticals and functional foods fortified with asparagus.

To address this issue, we report nano-net of Cu-chitosan nanoparticles (Cu-chitosan NPs) which has the ability to extend the shelf-life of stored tomato. The application of Cu-chitosan NPs (0.01-0.04%) significantly curtailed microbial decay (<5 versus>50% in control), physiological loss in weight (14.36 versus 28.13% in control), respiration rate (0.01173 versus 0.01879 g CO2 kg(-1) h(-1)) and maintained fruit firmness (34.0 versus 17.33 N in control) during storage. Further, these NPs significantly retarded loss of titratable acidity, retained total soluble solids, total and reducing sugars, lycopene, ascorbic acid and inhibited polyphenol oxidase. Likewise, NPs effectively preserved L-* (lightness), a* (red/green) and b* (blue/yellow) values and maintained organoleptic score. Scanning electron microscopy study confirmed that Cu-chitosan NPs orchestrate into an invisible-intangible nano-net over tomato surface which may plausibly act as a potential barrier at all possible openings (stem scar, cuticle wax, lenticels, and aquaporins) to control microbial infection, moisture loss, gas exchanges and respiration rate. Overall, nano-net extended keeping quality of tomatoes up to 21 days at room temperature (27 +/- 2 degrees C, 55 +/- 2% relative humidity).
