High-throughput thin-film composite membrane via interfacial polymerization using monomers of ultra-low concentration on tannic acid – Copper interlayer for organic solvent nanofiltration

In this work, a novel organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane was engineered precisely via interfacial polymerization on the surface of an interlayer which was in-situ constructed using tannic acid – copper (TA-Cu) complex on the surface of a polyimide substrate membrane, and then was followed by crosslinking and activation procedures. Reliable Method for Fabricating Tissue-Mimicking Materials With Designated Relative Permittivity and Conductivity at 128 MHz

Artificial materials that can simultaneously mimic the relative permittivity and conductivity of various human tissues are usually used in medical applications. However, the method of precisely designing these materials with designated values of both relative permittivity and conductivity at 3 T MRI resonance frequency is lacking. In this study, a reliable method is established to determine the compositions of artificial dielectric materials with designated relative permittivity and conductivity at 128 MHz. Sixty dielectric materials were produced using oil, sodium chloride, gelatin, and deionized water as the main raw materials. The dielectric properties of these dielectric materials were measured using the open-ended coaxial line method at 128 MHz. Nonlinear least-squares Marquardt-Levenberg algorithm was used to obtain the formula, establishing the relationship between the compositions of the dielectric materials and their dielectric properties at 128 MHz. The dielectric properties of the blood, gall bladder, muscle, skin, lung, and bone at 128 MHz were selected to verify the reliability of the obtained formula. For the obtained formula, the coefficient of determination and the expanded uncertainties with a coverage factor of k = 2 were 0.991% and 4.9% for relative permittivity and 0.992% and 6.4% for conductivity. For the obtained artificial materials measured using the open-ended coaxial line method, the maximal difference of relative permittivity and conductivity were 1.0 and 0.02 S/m, respectively, with respect to the designated values. In conclusion, the compositions of tissue-mimicking material can be quickly determined after the establishment of the formulas with the expanded uncertainties of less than 10%. Characterisation and antioxidant activity of glycated casein hydrolysate with xylose: Impacts of zinc sulphate and cupric chloride

Impacts of zinc sulphate and cupric chloride on characteristics and antioxidant capacities of glycated products (GPs) derived from casein hydrolysate (CH) and xylose were studied. The addition of zinc sulphate and cupric chloride promoted production of higher and smaller molecular substances in xylose-CH GPs and CH. Sodium alginate/bismuth (III) oxide composites for gamma-ray shielding applications

In the present work, we have explored the efficacy of bismuth (III) oxide (Bi2O3) loaded, calcium ion cross-linked solution cast sodium alginate composite films for radioprotective applications. Calcium ion cross-linking increased the water and chemical resistance, which further improved on introduction of Bi2O3 into the composites. The 40 wt% Bi2O3 loaded films showed good heat resistance with the peak degradation temperature reaching as high as 251 degrees C. The Bi2O3 loaded composites showed enhanced tensile strength (TS) and Youngs modulus (YM). Compared to high-modulus polymers like epoxy, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC), these exhibit relatively greater extent of stretching before breaking. The gamma-ray attenuation experiments showed that mass attenuation coefficients of the composites at various gamma-ray energies increased with filler loading. These composites are effective in shielding gamma-rays from radioactive sources like Cs-137, Na-22, Ba-133, and Co-60 that are widely employed in several medical and industrial applications. The overall enhancement in thermal, mechanical, and radiation shielding characteristics of the composites may be attributed to the uniform distribution of the fillers in alginate matrix. These nontoxic sodium alginate/Bi2O3 composites can be used as soft and biodegradable radiation shields, which may be processed to wearable forms.

Durability of recycled aggregate thermal insulation concrete under combined flexural loading and freeze-thaw cycles

A testing program including freeze-thaw cycles and flexural-loading combined action was designed to investigate the durability of recycled aggregate thermal insulation concrete (RATIC). The volume replacement ratios of recycled coarse aggregates (RCAs) were 0, 30, 50, 70, and 100%, and the flexural-load ratios were 0, 15, 30, 45%, and the glazed hollow bead particles (GHBs) with volume percentage of 130% were added. To evaluate the performance of RATIC, the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity (RDME) and mass loss rate (MLR) were estimated. The results show that the flexural-load stress exhibited an obvious negative effect on the freeze-thaw resistance of RATIC. With a 45% flexural-load ratio, RATIC fractured even before the load cycles reached 30. The decrease in the RDME was accelerated by the flexural-load stress, whereas this stress exhibited little effect on MLR. The durability performance of RATIC under combined actions decreases with the increase in the RCA replacement ratio, whereas the performance increased with the increment in the thermal insulation aggregate GHBs. Further to reveal the mechanism of RATIC under double actions, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and a new method of fluorescence analysis were employed. The results showed the existence of more micropores and microcracks in the tensile area. Further, compared to the new interfacial transition zones (ITZs), the microcracks in old ITZs caused by combined actions aggravated the damage caused in the freeze-thaw cycles. CREB1 protects against the renal injury in a rat model of kidney stone disease and calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals-induced injury in NRK-52E cells

Kidney stone disease (KSD) is a common urinary disease with increasing prevalence worldwide. In this study, we investigated the effect of cyclic AMP responsive element binding protein (CREB) 1 in a KSD model of rat and calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystals-treated NRK-52E cells. Rats were pretreated with lentivirus (LV)CREB1 vector or LV-control vector and administrated with ethylene glycol + ammonium chloride to induce KSD. It was found that CREB1 was activated in the renal tissue of non-treated KSD rats. Pretreating with LV-CREB1 vector significantly enhanced CREB1 expression in KSD rats. Biochemical analysis for serum and urine showed that upregulation of CREB1 could improve the renal function of KSD rats. Histological analysis confirmed that upregulation of CREB1 alleviated the renal injury in KSD rats. Moreover, the upregulation of CREB1 suppressed the apoptosis in renal tissue of KSD rats through regulating apoptosis-associated proteins. Further study showed that the upregulation of CREB1 could attenuate the oxidative stress in KSD rats as well. More interestingly, the upregulation of CREB1 enhanced the activity of complex I and complex III and the expression of mitochondrial cytochrome c, implicating the effect of CREB1 on improving mitochondrial function in KSD rats. In vitro study confirmed that upregulation of CREB1 inhibited the apoptosis and oxidative stress, while improved the mitochondrial function of NRK-52E cells treated with COM crystals, demonstrating the protective effect of CREB1 on COM crystals-induced renal epithelial cell injury. Therefore, CREB1 might be served as a promising target in the prophylaxis and treatment of KSD.

Combined effects of supplementary cementitious materials (silica fume, GGBS, fly ash and rice husk ash) and steel fiber on the hardened properties of recycled aggregate concrete

Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is now getting much more attention than ever as a likely substitute for natural aggregate concrete, credited to the growing interest of many countries towards the sustainable environment and economy. To increase the goodwill of RAC its performance in terms of strength and durability needs to be optimized. This research article presents the effects of combined incorporation of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and hook-ended steel fibers (HSF) on compressive behavior and durability of RAC. In this study, four different SCMs (i.e. silica fume (SF), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), fly ash (FA), and rice husk ash (RHA)) were used in RAC with 0% and 1% HSF, respectively. SF, GGBS, FA, and RHA were respectively used as 10%, 30%, 20%, and 15% by mass replacement of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Studied properties included compressive strength, elastic modulus, splitting tensile strength, water absorption (WA), chloride penetration (CP), and acid attack resistance (AAR). The results of testing indicate that mechanical strength and durability of RAC can be improved substantially by the combined incorporation of SCMs and HSF reinforcement. SCMs show more contribution towards the development of durability properties of RAC, whereas, HSF shows more contribution towards the development of mechanical properties and AAR. 10%SF + 1% HSF and 15%RHA + 1% HSF helped in the production of RAC having superior mechanical and durability properties compared to that of the plain RAC. Moreover, the benefits of combined addition of HSF and SCMs are notably higher than the sum of the benefits achieved through individual incorporation of HSF and SCMs. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. High conductivity and alkali-resistant stability of imidazole side chain crosslinked anion exchange membrane

Poly (aryl ether ketone) polymers (PAEKS) were synthesized by polycondensation of trimethyl hydroquinone, allyl bisphenol S and 4,4-difluorodiphenyl ketone as monomers. A series of uncrosslinked and crosslinked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with diverse contents of 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and 1-vinylimidazole were prepared by grafting and bromination reaction. The 1-vinylimidazole in the AEMs was simultaneously present as a crosslinked agent. (HNMR)-H-1 and FT-IR spectra demonstrated the structure of the above PAEKS and AEMs, respectively. TEM images and SAXS profiles showed the formation of distinct hydrophilic/hydrophobic microphase separation in the TCImP membranes, which offered vast of channels for ion transmission. Among them, TCImP-3 membrane showed the highest hydroxide conductivity of 0.144 S/cm at 80 degrees C. Compared with the uncrosslinked AEMs, the crosslinked AEMs exhibited slightly lower water uptake and swelling ratio. The crosslinked structures in the AEMs were helpful to improve the mechanical property and alkali-resistant stability of AEMs. The hydroxide conductivity of the TCImP-3 membrane kept 0.117 S/cm in 2 M NaOH solutions at 80 degrees C for 400 h. Meanwhile, crosslinked AEMs showed excellent thermostability. We believe that TCImP membranes are a promising AEMs material.

Service life of reinforced concrete seawalls suffering from chloride attack: Theoretical modelling and analysis

This paper presents a theoretical model for predicting the service life of reinforced concrete (RC) seawalls under chloride attack. The developed theoretical model not only takes into account the effects of chloride-induced degradation, but also properly considers the external water and earth pressures acting on the RC seawalls. To theoretically model the service life of the RC seawall, the whole service life is divided into the initiation stage for chloride ions diffusion and the propagation stage for corrosion products development. The diffusion of chloride ions in the seawall is simulated by a two-sided chloride diffusion model on the basis of the Fick’s second law, which is sufficiently validated by the corresponding ABAQUS numerical model. The propagation stage is modeled by a mechanical model that considers both the external pressures and the internal expansive pressure induced by the rust productions. Example analyses are conducted to illustrate the application of the model and investigate the effects of some key factors on the service life of RC seawall. The results show that the service life of reinforced concrete seawall increases with cover thickness, tensile strength of concrete, threshold chloride concentration, burial depth and surface load, while decreases with the increase of rebar diameter and water-cement ratio.
