A solution of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (300 mg, 2.38 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) was treated with 3,4-dichlorobenzylamine (539 mg, 3.06 mmol), and the mixture stirred at rt for 5 hr. The aqueous layer was further extracted with dichloromethane (2 x 30 mL) and the combined organic layers were dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by flash column chromatography on aluminium oxide eluting with dichloromethane: methanol (98:2) to yield the product as an orange oil (635 mg, 93percent).
