A solution of 4-chloro-3-methylanisole (3.0 g, 19.2 mmol) (Acros) and potassium permanganate (7.57 g, 47.9 mmol) in water (60 ML) was heated at reflux for 4 h.The precipitate was filtered and the solution was extracted with EtOAc.
