2-(4-Nitrophenyl) butanoic acid (1.66 g, 7.9mmol) was dissolved in trifluoroacetic anhydride (1.1 mL, 7.9 mmol), then(2-chloroethoxy)benzene (1.0 ml, 7.2 mmol) was added dropwise. The resultingmixture was allowed to stir at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was poured into saturatedaqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (50 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (2x 50 mL). The combined organic phases were driedover anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated on a rotaryevaporator.
