Introduction Socioeconomic disparities have been established for conventional cigarette use, but not for electronic cigarettes. This study estimates socioeconomic gradients in exclusive use of conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and dual use (ie, use of both products) among adults in the United States. Methods Analyses consider nationally representative data on 25- to 54-year-old respondents to the 2014-2016 National Health Interview Surveys (N = 50306). Demographically adjusted seemingly unrelated regression models estimate how two socioeconomic status measures-respondent education and household income-relate to current exclusive use of conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and dual use. Results Conventional cigarette use exhibits negative education and income gradients, consistent with existing research: -12.9 percentage points (confidence interval [CI]: -14.0, -11.8) if college educated, and -9.5 percentage points (CI: -10.9, -8.1) if household income exceeds 400% of the federal poverty level. These gradients are flatter for dual use (-1.4 [CI: -1.8, -0.9] and -1.9 [CI: -2.5, -1.2]), and statistically insignificant for electronic cigarette use (-0.03 [CI: -0.5, 0.4] and -0.3 [CI: -0.8, -0.2]). Limiting the sample to ever-smokers, higher education is associated with a 0.9 percentage point increase in likelihood of exclusive electronic cigarette use at interview (CI: 0.0, 1.9). Conclusions Education and income gradients in exclusive electronic cigarette use are small and statistically insignificant, contrasting with strong negative gradients in exclusive conventional cigarette use. Furthermore, more educated smokers are more likely to switch to exclusive e-cigarette use than less educated smokers. Such differential switching may exacerbate socioeconomic disparities in smoking-related morbidity and mortality, but lower the burden of tobacco-related disease. Implications Research has not yet established whether socioeconomic disparities in electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use resemble those observed for conventional cigarettes. This article uses nationally representative data on US adults aged 25-54 to estimate income and education gradients in exclusive use of conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and dual use. Both gradients are steep and negative for conventional cigarette use, but flat and statistically insignificant for e-cigarette use. Repeating the analysis among ever-smokers indicates that more educated smokers are more likely to transition toward exclusive e-cigarette use than less educated smokers. Such differential substitution may exacerbate disparities in smoking-related morbidity and mortality.

Bronsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs) have been used as catalyst and solvent in organic synthesis, due to their negligible volatility, remarkable solubility, good catalytic activity, and easily structurally tunable properties. In the present study, we have investigated the catalytic efficiency of economically viable ionic liquids bearing different cations pyridinium ([PyH](+) and triethylammonium [TEAH](+)) for the esterification of aromatic acid with various aliphatic alcohols and crossed aldol condensation of aromatic aldehydes with cyclohexanone under ambient condition. We also examined the effect of various process parameters on the yield of aromatic esters and alpha,alpha’-bis(arylidene)cycloalkanones.

Analysis of acidic pharmaceuticals in complex biological samples is a challenging and formidable task due to the existence of interfering constituents within the sample matrices. Therefore, in order to avoid analytical column clogging and suppression/enhancement of signals of the analyte of interest, herein a simple, cost-effective and quick online ion chromatography based clean-up setup was introduced. This system was further coupled with a cost-effective homemade photochemically induced fluorimetric (PIF) setup for direct online conversion of non fluorescent acidic pharmaceutical drugs into their respective fluorescent species. This advantageous system was favorably applied for the determination of four non-fluorescent acidic compounds in two complex biological samples (human serum and oral fluid) with minimum labor and organic solvent consumption. At optimized conditions, the developed method has shown good sensitivity, selectivity, satisfactory recoveries (88.68-102.14%) and low limits of detection (0.35-8.10 mu g/L) with minimum or zero matrix effect.

Synthesis of 50 analogues of the natural insecticide synergists, dillapiol and sesamol, is reported. These were evaluated as potential insecticide synergists based on their inhibition of human CYP3A4. The most potent inhibitors have a relatively large hydrophobic substituent at either position 5 or 6 of these molecules. In the present study, carbon black (CB), multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and granular activated carbon (GAC) were employed to support palladium (Pd) catalyst. The prepared Pd/CB, Pd/MWCNTs and Pd/GAC moveable catalysts were aimed to address the common issues (easy loss of catalyst and poor long-term performance) of normal fixed catalysts. The results of various characterizations (e.g., TEM, XRD, and XPS) clearly show that the Pd nanopartides were successfully loaded onto the carbon-supports, especially CB and MWCNTs. And more importantly, the morphologies, Pd distribution, and chemical structure of these moveable catalysts were almost not changed after 3 h reaction. The moveable Pd/CB, Pd/MWCNTs, and Pd/GAC catalysts had good reactivity for 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA) dechlorination, and Pd/CB exhibited the best performance. The Pd/CB also shows the best adsorption capacity of 2,4-DCBA and dechlorination product (benzoic acid, BA), and the adsorption of BA was significantly inhibited in the presence of current due to the repulsion between the both negatively charged compounds and adsorbents. The removal of 2,4-DCBA and the generation rate of BA was improved with a pre-adsorption process, which was a promising strategy with higher dechlorination rate and shortened electrolysis time. Moreover, the loss of Pd catalyst was negligible during the 10 consecutive cycles experiment, and the improved longevity could be expected. These results suggested the good reactivity, stability, and reusability of moveable Pd/CB catalyst.

Electrochemical reduction-oxidation processes with the aid of cathode catalysts are promising technologies for the decomposition of organic compounds. High-efficiency and low-cost catalysts for electrochemical reductive dechlorination and two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are vital to the overall degradation of chlorinated organic compounds. This study reports electrochemical dechlorination using a single-atom Co-loaded sulfide graphene (Co-SG) catalyst via atomic hydrogen generated from the electrochemical reduction of H2O and electrolysis of hydrogen. The Co-SG electrocatalyst exhibited a remarkable performance for H2O2 synthesis with a half-wave potential of 0.70 V (vs RHE) and selectivity over 90%. The high electrochemical performance was achieved for bifunctional electrocatalysis with regard to the smaller overpotentials, faster kinetics, and higher cycling stability compared to the noble metal-based electrocatalysts. In this study, 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid was well degraded and the TOC concentration was effectively reduced. This work introduces the preparation of a new active site for high-performance single-atom catalysts and also promotes its application in the electrochemical degradation of chlorinated organic pollutants.

Organic air pollutants have considerable influence particularly on atmospheric chemistry, compared to other air pollutants. Traffic is one of the major sources of air pollutants occurred in Canakkale atmosphere by both remarkable road and marine traffic loads around the harbors. The aims of this study were finding the daily, week/weekend, and spatial variations of VOC at multiple sampling points of Canakkale and Kilitbahir. In this study, active air samples were collected from the major roads of Kilitbahir and Canakkale Harbors during rush hours and off-peak in 2018 summer. According to the measurement results, average levels of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) were around 129 mu g/m(3) in Canakkale and 93 mu g/m(3) in Kilitbahir. Toluene was the most abundant compound. Average B: T: E: X ratio was calculated as 2.4:7.0:1:5.5 in Canakkale and 3.2:7.6:1:5.2 in Kilitbahir. According to the sampling points of both locations, levels of TVOC, benzene, toluene, and m,p-xylene in Canakkale and toluene levels in Kilitbahir showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). Also, benzene, which was already classified as a human carcinogen, varied diurnally in Kilitbahir (p < 0.05). Toluene levels varied between week and weekend days (p < 0.05). Moreover, measured VOC levels were compared with air quality monitoring station (AQMS) data and meteorological parameters. TVOC levels showed positive correlations with SO2 and PM10 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, a multivariate factor analysis applied to data set including VOC measurements, AQMS data, and meteorological parameters implied that traffic is the predominant factor influencing the air quality around the study sites.
