Potable reuse facilities must be designed and operated to minimize the presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and other trace organics in the product water. Reverse osmosis (RO) is incorporated into the process train of many potable reuse facilities and has been demonstrated to achieve excellent removal of many, but not all, organic compounds. Organics that may be poorly removed by RO include low-molecular weight (MW) neutral compounds. This laboratory study examined the rejection of 73 low-MW neutral organics through a commercial RO membrane that is commonly used in potable reuse applications. The organics were selected using a reductionist approach so that the effect of individual functional groups on rejection could be ascertained. The research demonstrated that halogens, carbonyl functional groups, C=C double bonds, and aromaticity decrease rejection, that methyl and hydroxyl functional groups increase rejection, and that the position of functional groups in structural isomers has a significant effect on rejection. The results help explain the discrepancies and inconsistencies in RO rejection of neutral organics that are observed when considered from the conventional perspective of molecular size and hydrophobicity.

Type I Interferon (IFN) signaling plays an important role in the immune defense system against virus infection and in the innate immune response, thus IFNs are widely used as anti-viral agents and treatment for immune disorder or cancer. However, there is a growing demand for novel small-molecule IFN inducer due to tolerance, toxicity, or short duration of action following direct administration of IFNs. In this study, we assessed arylpiperazine (ARP) as a new core skeleton of IFN inducer. To investigate structure-activity relationship, we designed and synthesized a series of ARP analogues and evaluated the ability to stimulate IFN response in THP-1 human monocyte cells. Compound 5i was identified as a potent type I IFN inducer as it significantly increased cytokine secretion and increased expression of various IFN-stimulating genes which are representative biomarkers of type I IFN pathway. Our results suggested a beneficial therapeutic potential of 5i as an anti-viral agent.

We report the development of a facile protocol for the deoxygenative hydroboration of aliphatic and aryl carboxylic acids to afford corresponding primary alcohols under solvent-free and catalyst-free conditions. The reaction proceeds under ambient temperature exhibits good tolerance towards various functional groups and generates quantitative yields. The plausible mechanism involves the formation of Lewis acid-base adducts as well as the liberation of hydrogen gas.

The emergence and widespread occurrence of plant bacterial diseases that cause global production constraints have become major challenges to agriculture worldwide. To promote the discovery and development of new bactericides, imidazole-labeled 1,3,4-oxadiazole thioethers were first fabricated by integrating the crucially bioactive scaffolds of the imidazole motif and 1,3,4-oxadiazole skeleton in a single molecular architecture. Subsequently, a superior antibacterial compound A(6) was gradually discovered possessing excellent competence against plant pathogens Xanthomonas oryzae pv oryzae and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv citri with EC50 values of 0.734 and 1.79 mu g/mL, respectively. These values were better than those of commercial agents bismerthiazol (92.6 mu g/mL) and thiodiazole copper (77.0 mu g/mL). Further modifying the imidazole moiety into the imidazolium scaffold led to the discovery of an array of potent antibacterial compounds providing the corresponding minimum EC50 values of 0.295 and 0.607 mu g/mL against the two strains. Moreover, a plausible action mechanism for attacking pathogens was proposed based on the concentration dependence of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence microscopy images. Given the simple molecular structures, easy synthetic procedure, and highly efficient bioactivity, imidazole (or imidazolium)-labeled 1,3,4-oxadiazole thioethers can be further explored and developed as promising indicators for the development of commercial drugs.

High-temperature thermal energy storage in shallow aquifers can potentially increase ambient groundwater temperatures up to 70 degrees C or even more. Since an increase in temperature is expected to influence contaminant mass flux into groundwater monitoring the spreading of organic contaminants located in the subsurface is crucial. In numerous former studies, the NAPL solubility, one major parameter controlling mass flux on field scale, was measured at temperatures up to 70 degrees C for a broad spectrum of organic substances. However, quantitative calculations of solubilities as a function of temperature considering a compiled database are largely missing. Aiming to examine the reliability of existing solubility-temperature relationships, to describe them functionally and further to identify knowledge gaps, previously published data on solubilities of 42 different organic groundwater contaminants were evaluated in this study. By using a common temperature regression function, the calculated solubility curves from compiled solubility data for 5-70 degrees C show relative changes between a few percent (CHCs and BTEX) and up to 2000% (PAH5). As published temperature-dependent solubilities for chlorinated ethylenes are contradictory in parts, solubilities of tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, 1,2-cis-dichloroethylene and 1,2-trans-dichloroethylene were additionally investigated in more detail using batch experiments between 5 and 70 degrees C. The results show distinctive solubility minima at medium temperatures (20-40 degrees C) with concentrations decreasing from 5 degrees C to the minimum by 10-20%. The measured and calculated temperature-dependent solubilities enable a more reliable assessment of thermal energy storage at contaminated sites, of existing thermal remediation approaches and of combinations of underground heat storage with groundwater remediation. The current report represents a transition-metal-free synthesis of oxazoline and isoxazoline derivatives by a tandem electro-oxidative chalcogenation-cyclization process. Both C-Se and C-S bond-forming protocols were developed without using any external oxidant and the reaction was performed at room temperature, open to the air. Using this methodology, 29 substituted oxazoline and 16 substituted isoxazoline derivatives were synthesized with up to 91% isolated yield.

Myeloid differentiation protein 2 (MD2) is a co-receptor of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) responsible for the recognition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and mediates a series of TLR4-dependent inflammatory responses in inflammatory lung diseases including acute lung injury (ALI). Targeting MD2 thus may provide a therapeutic strategy against these lung diseases. In this study, we identified a novel compound 4k with the potent anti-inflammatory activity among 39 methyl gallate derivatives (MGDs). MGD 4k exhibited a high binding affinity to MD2, which in turn prevented the formation of the LPS/MD2/TLR4 complex. In addition, MGD 4k significantly reversed the upregulation of LPS-induced inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, intracellular adhesion molecule-1, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, MGD 4k performed anti-inflammatory function by inactivating JNK, ERK and p38 signaling pathways. Taken together, our study identified MGD 4k as a novel potential therapeutic agent for ALI through inhibiting MD2, inflammatory responses, and major inflammation-associated signaling pathways.

This ligand class combines a strong electron-donating ability comparable to NHC ligands with high steric demand similar to biaryl phosphines. The active Pd species are stabilized by agostic C-H center dot center dot center dot Pd rather than by Pd-arene interactions. The practical advantage of YPhos ligands arises from their easy and scalable synthesis from widely available, inexpensive starting materials. Benchmark studies showed that YPhos-Pd complexes are superior to the best-known phosphine ligands in room-temperature aminations of aryl chlorides.
