Reaction of I (R = R1 = H) with ortho-bromoarylmethyltosylamides TsNHCH2R2 [R2 = 2-BrC6H4, 2-Br-4,5-(MeO)2C6H2, 2-Br-3-pyridinyl, 1-Br-3,4-dihydro-2-naphthyl, 2-Br-3,4,5-(MeO)3C6H] under analogous conditions yielded dihydroindoloquinazolines such as III; treatment of III with Cs2CO3 at 110° yielded the indoloquinazoline IV. Ynamide intermediates in the preparation of sulfonamidoindoles were isolated in some cases. The structure of a trimethoxydihydroquinazolinoindole was determined by X-ray crystallog.
