Pyrolysis of o-BrC6H4CO2H, diphenic acid, o-sulfobenzoic acid gave resp. a trace, 5%, and 5.5% II. No II or substituted II was formed in the pyrolysis of 4-PhCH2 derivative of I, 4-MeO derivative of I, o-ClC5H4CO2H, phthalimide (III), N-Me derivative of III, coumaran-2,3-dione, or disalicylide.
