The absorption spectra in the near ultraviolet from 3500 to 2200 A. of the 10 possible isomeric nitrochlorotoluenes and nitrochloroanisoles in MeOH and cyclohexane solution are examined The spectra of PhNO2 are compared with the isomeric nitrotoluenes and chloronitrotoluenes, especially in regard to the primary band. For the Me substituent passing from ο- to m- and p-position relative to -NO2 there results, resp., a light hypsochromic, a light bathochromic, and a bathochromic effect, and for Cl substituent, resp., hypsochromic, light hypsochromic, and bathochromic effect. Similar results are obtained for the MeO substituent. Besides considering the absorption intensities and the solvent influence on the λ of absorption maximum, and following McConnel’s methodology (C.A. 46, 10875i), it is possible to assign every observed band to π → π* electronic transitions. 15 references.
