The microwave-assisted synthesis of 2-aryl-4,5-dicarbonitrile imidazole derivatives I [R = H, 4-Cl, 3-MeO, etc.] via a one-step reaction between aromatic aldehydes and 2,3-diaminomaleonitrile using HNO3 as a metal-free catalyst and a strong oxidizing agent was described. The present methodol. had significant advantages as like as one-step synthesis, shorter reaction times, available starting materials and higher yields of products with easy purification process, cleaner reaction than the previously reported processes. The valuable benefits of this method had provided a promising prospect for easier, greener and faster synthesis of diciano imidazoles.
