More importantly, this work uses the DFT model to design and verify the DES systems in detail, and then explain the mechanism of the influence of the hydroxyl position on the structure and electrochemical performance of the DES system from a theoretical perspective. Obviously, the DES systems having difference structures and DFT calculation proposed in this article provide a significant way and reference for in-depth understanding of DES electrolytes and applications.

Interactions Between Hydrated Cerium(III) Cations and Carboxylates in an Aqueous Solution: Anomalously Strong Complex Formation with Diglycolate, Suggesting a Chelate Effect

Interactions between hydrated Ce3+ and various carboxylates are of fundamental interest. Anomalously strong interactions with Ce3+ occur when diglycolic acid (DGA) is added into a Ce3+ aqueous solution, unlike various other carboxylic acids. Herein, the complex-formation constants of Ce3+ with these acids are evaluated via absorption and emission spectra. Hydrated Ce3+ emits fluorescence with unity quantum yield; however, addition of various carboxylates statically quenches the fluorescence when Ce3+-carboxylate complexes form because the fluorescence lifetime is constant irrespective of the carboxylate concentration. In the observed static quenching, the complex-formation constants obtained from the absorption and emission spectra (K-abs and K-em) agree well. The binding of Ce3+ by the conjugate Lewis bases, i.e., carboxylates, is approximately inversely proportional to the pH. Adding DGA into the system also statically quenches the fluorescence, but far more efficiently, even in a much weaker solution. We rigorously deduce K-abs and K-em of Ce3+ with DGA without any approximation using comparable concentrations. Careful fittings provide equivalent K-em and K-abs values, and by varying the pH and ionic strength, we confirm that this equivalence is an inherent property of the Ce3+-DGA system. The Lewis acid-base theory cannot explain why DGA binds to Ce3+ similar to 1000 times more strongly than the other carboxylates. This anomalously strong binding may be due to a chelate effect caused by the DGA’s central oxygen atom, which forms a five-membered ring with the conjugate Lewis bases of DGA; double chelate rings can also form, while bis-deprotonated DGA binds to Ce3+, facilitated by the central oxygen. Therefore, DGA enables efficient quenching through the chelate effect when it binds to Ce3+.

Effects of empagliflozin on renal sodium and glucose handling in patients with acute heart failure

Aims Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors improve clinical outcome in patients with heart failure (HF), but the mechanisms behind their beneficial effects are not yet fully understood. We examined the effects of empagliflozin on renal sodium and glucose handling in patients with acute HF. Methods and results This study was a pre-defined sub-study of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicentre study (EMPA-RESPONSE-AHF). Patients were allocated within 24 h of an acute HF admission to either empagliflozin 10 mg/day (n = 40) or placebo (n = 39) for 30 days. Markers of glucose and sodium handling were measured daily during the first 96 h and at day 30. Patients were 76 (range 38-89) years old and 33% had diabetes. The use of loop diuretics during the first 96 h was similar in both groups. Empagliflozin increased fractional glucose excretion with a peak after 24 h (21.8% vs. 0.1%; P < 0.001), without affecting plasma glucose concentration, while fractional sodium and chloride excretion and urinary osmolality remained unchanged (P >0.3 for all). However, empagliflozin increased plasma osmolality (delta osmolality at 72 h: 5 +/- 8 vs. 2 +/- 5 mOsm/kg; P = 0.049). Finally, there was an early decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate with empagliflozin vs. placebo (-10 +/- 12 vs. -2 +/- 12 mL/min/1.73 m(2); P = 0.009), which recovered within 30 days. Conclusion In patients with acute HF, empagliflozin increased fractional glucose excretion and plasma osmolality, without affecting fractional sodium excretion or urine osmolality and caused a temporary decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate. This suggests that empagliflozin stimulates osmotic diuresis through increased glycosuria rather than natriuresis in patients with acute HF.

Time-variant probabilistic assessment of corrosion initiation of marine concrete structures considering maximum phenomenon

This study presents a new dual time-variant chloride diffusion model considering maximum phenomenon for concrete structures exposed to marine environment. The model is developed from the assumption that the concentration gradient is the sole or dominant driving force for chloride ingress in concrete, and both the chloride diffusion coefficient and peak chloride content are considered as time-variant. The applicability and accuracy of the developed model are verified by comparing the fitted and predicted chloride profiles with field data. Based on the developed model, time-variant probabilistic evaluation of corrosion initiation in a typical prestressed box girder located near coast is carried out. Results reveal that the maximum phenomenon has a significant effect on the prediction of the time to corrosion initiation. The results of sensitivity analysis indicate that the critical chloride content is the decisive parameter in the prediction of the corrosion initiation time, followed by the relative humidity, water-to-binder ratio, temperature, thickness of concrete cover, etc. Besides, the effects of the correlation between random variables and the distance from the coast on the time-variant probability of corrosion initiation are investigated. It is found that the correlation among random variables should be considered, and the effect of distance from the coast on the time-variant probability of corrosion initiation is sharply decreasing at a very short distance from the coast.
