The solid was added to a mixture of ethanol (300 mL), water (300 mL), and sulfuric acid (30 mL), and the mixture was heated to reflux for 3 h and then cooled. The solids were collected by filtration. The solid was purified by column with ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (1 :30) to give 12 g (30%) of 2,5- dichloroterephthalaldehyde as a white solid.
