The poor robustness and durability of superhydrophobic surfaces under various externally imposed stresses have become a challenging issue for practical applications. Here, an efficient dissolution and modification strategy is proposed for facilely fabricating superhydrophobic polyethylene (F-PE/SiO2) foam with 98.6% porosity using sodium chloride (NaCl) as a sacrificial template and superhydrophobic nano-silica particles as a surface chemical modifier. Non-leaching antibacterial coatings through quaternary ammonium salts containing polymers were successfully produced in a facile way to provide infection resistant surfaces against multi drug resistant bacteria such as B. licheniformis. In order to do so, a series of random copolymers of styrene (S) and vinyl benzyl chloride (VBC) were synthesized by free radical polymerization technique and subsequently, VBC (V) was functionalized with N,N-dimethylhexadecylamine to introduce quaternary ammonium (QA) salts in the backbone of the copolymers. The copolymers showed an excellent film forming ability, thereby providing an ultrathin coating on various substrates such as metal (stainless steel), glass, polyethylene and polystyrene, as observed by SEM.The coatings were found to be uniform, non leachable in aqueous medium and exhibit good adhesion to various substrates. The antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the non-leachable coating of random copolymers were screened against B. licheniformis. Among, the copolymer containing 75% quaternized VBC (75VSQA) having 16-C long alkyl chain was found to show maximum antibacterial and antibiofilm activity owing to an appropriate hydrophobic /hydrophilic balance. Their non-leachable antibacterial and antibiofim activity make these coatings suitable for many applications, e.g. marine paints, textile/hospital coatings etc.

In this study, a novel ternary Z-scheme Graphite-like Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4)/Silver (Ag)/Silver Phosphate (Ag3PO4) photocatalyst was designed and prepared using a two-step method (sodium chloride (NaCl) template-assisted strategy plus selective deposition). Its photocatalysts performance against removing 400 ppm of Nitric Oxides (NOx) was then investigated. We found 50 wt% g-C3N4/Ag/Ag3PO4 (AP-CN 2:1) catalyst removes up to 74% of NO in 90 min under the illumination of visible light (>420 nm), which is respectively 3.5 and 1.8 times higher than using g-C3N4 or Ag3PO4 , alone. This improved performance was attributed to the formation of Z-scheme g-C3N4/Ag/Ag3PO4 heterojunction, driven by the built-in electric field across the g-C3N4/Ag/Ag3PO4 interface. These separated the electron-hole but enhanced the original strong oxidation and reduction performance of related components. The superior performance is also attributed to the improved surface area, enhanced hydrophilicity (H2O2) and better visible-light-harvesting capability of the composite compound. More importantly, the AP-CN 2:1 sample maintained a NO removal rate of more than 73% even after four rounds of recycling. The photocatalytic oxidation removal mechanism was evaluated using the radical-capture experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR) and ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The findings of this work offer a simple but effective design of a highly reactive and practical ternary Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for the removal of toxic NO. Glucosuric, renal and haemodynamic effects of licogliflozin, a dual inhibitor of sodium-glucose co-transporter-1 and sodium-glucose co-transporter-2, in patients with chronic kidney disease: A randomized trial

Aim: To investigate the glucosuric, renal and haemodynamic effects of licogliflozin, a dual sodium-glucose co-transporter-1 and sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitor, in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: This multiple-dose, parallel-group, phase II mechanistic study randomized 53 participants (aged 18-78 years, body mass index <= 50 kg/m(2)) with varying degrees of CKD or normal renal function to treatment with licogliflozin (50 mg once daily) or placebo for 7 days. The effects of licogliflozin on 24-h urinary glucose excretion (UGE(24)), renal function, haemodynamics, pharmacokinetics and safety were assessed. Results: Licogliflozin treatment for 7 days significantly (p < .01) increased UGE(24) from baseline in participants with normal renal function (adjusted mean change: 41.8 [33.6, 49.9] g) or with mild (32.6 [24.1, 41.0] g), moderate A (35.7 [28.6, 42.9] g) or moderate B (20.3 [13.1, 27.5] g) CKD, but not in severe (6.2 [-0.71, 13.18] g) CKD. Licogliflozin reduced urinary electrolytes (sodium, potassium and chloride), blood pressure and urinary volume to varying extents among different groups. Significant increases in renin (p < .05), angiotensin II (p < .05) and aldosterone (p < .01) levels were observed. Adverse events were generally mild, and most commonly included diarrhoea (94%), flatulence (68%) and abdominal pain (21%). Conclusion: Licogliflozin treatment results in significantly increased UGE and favourable changes in urinary electrolytes and haemodynamics in patients with varying degrees of CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate >= 45 mL/min/1.73 m(2)).

Combination of solvent extraction with deep eutectic solvent based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for the analysis of aflatoxin M-1 in cheese samples using response surface methodology optimization

A new extraction procedure based on combination of a solvent extraction and deep eutectic solvent based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction has been introduced for the extraction of aflatoxin M-1 from cheese samples. In this method, acetonitrile, deionized water, and n-hexane are added onto the sample and vortexed. Owning to different affinities of the substances in cheese toward the mentioned solvents, an efficient and selective extraction of the analyte is done in the acetonitrile phase. After centrifugation, the acetonitrile phase is removed and mixed with a new hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent prepared from N,N-diethanol ammonium chloride and carvacrol as an extraction solvent. The mixture is injected into deionized water, and a cloudy solution is obtained. Eventually, an aliquot of the organic phase is injected into high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. After optimizing the effective parameters with the response surface methodology and a quadratic model, limits of detection and quantification were 0.74 and 2.56 ng/kg, respectively. The obtained extraction recovery and enrichment factor were 94% and 94, respectively. Also, intra- (n = 6) and interday (n = 4) precisions were less than or equal to 8.6% at a concentration of 5 ng/kg. The suggested method was applied to determine aflatoxin M-1 in different cheese samples.
