Petroleum hydrocarbon status of the Buffalo River Estuary in East London, South Africa, was evaluated from Jan. to May, 2016. Surface water and sediment samples were collected from five points in the estuary and extracted using standard methods. The extracts were subsequently analyzed by gas chromatog.-flame ionization detection. Results showed that total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) varied from 7.65 to 477 渭g/L in the water and 12.59 to 1,100 mg/kg in the sediments, with mean values of 146.50 卤 27.96 渭g/L and 209.81 卤 63.82 mg/kg, resp. Concentrations of TPH in the sediments correlated significantly with organic carbon (OC) in both seasons. TPH and OC levels were sligthly lower in summer than in autumn in the two environmental matrixes, and the average amount of TPH in the water samples collected from all the sampling stations was generally lower than the EU standard limit of 300 渭g/L. However, the levels in the sediments exceeded the EGASPIN target value (50 mg/kg) for mineral oil but were below the intervention value (5,000 mg/kg), indicating a serious impact of industrial growth and urbanization on the area, although the n-alkane ratios and indexes used for source tracking revealed excessive flow from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Combination of probiotic yeast and lactic acid bacteria as starter culture to produce maize-based beverages was written by Menezes, Aline Galvao Tavares;Ramos, Cintia Lacerda;Dias, Disney Ribeiro;Schwan, Rosane Freitas. And the article was included in Food Research International in 2018.Category: chlorides-buliding-blocks This article mentions the following:

Cereal-based fermented beverages are non-dairy products which are considered possible carriers for probiotic strains and alternatives for use by vegans and lactose-intolerant consumers. In the present work, the com. probiotic, Lactobacillus paracasei LBC-81, was used singly and in co-culture with potential probiotic yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae CCMA 0731, S. cerevisiae CCMA 0732, and Pichia kluyveri CCMA 0615, to ferment a maize-based substrate. All tested strains showed viability higher than 6 log CFU/mL, as recommended for food probiotic products, except for the yeast P. kluyveri which decreased during fermentation and storage time. A reduction in pH value, from approx. 7 to 4, was observed This decrease was due organic acid production, which did not affect the microbial viability. Lactic and acetic acids were the main organic acids produced during fermentation, and they decreased over 28 days of storage (<0.5 and 0.1 g/L for lactic and acetic acids, resp.). Ethanol was detected in the S. cerevisiae assays; however, the content was <5 g/L in a non-alc. beverage. Seventy volatile compounds were detected, including acids, alcs., aldehydes, esters, ketones, and other compounds Sensory anal. showed score of 5.93-4.57, resp. for appearance and taste. This is an important result, considering that the beverage had no flavoring additive and lacked a sweet taste. Therefore, probiotic beverages were successfully obtained by maize fermentation inoculated with co-culture of S. cerevisiae (CCMA 0731 or CCMA 0732) and L. paracasei LBC-81. Phospholipid-detergent conjugates are proposed as fusogenic carriers for gene delivery. Eleven compounds are prepared and their properties are investigated. The ability of the conjugates to promote fusion with a neg. charged model membrane is determined Their DNA delivery efficiency and cytotoxicity are assessed in vitro. Lipoplexes are administered in the mouse lung, and transgene expression Indeterminate inflammatory activity are measured. The results show that conjugation of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) with C12E4 produces a carrier that can efficiently deliver DNA to cells, with negligible -associated toxicity. Fusogenicity of the conjugates shows good correlation with in vitro transfection efficiency and crucially depends on the length of the polyether moiety of the detergent. Finally, DOPC-C12E4 reveals highly potent for in vivo DNA delivery and favorably compares to GL67A, the current golden standard for gene delivery to the airway, opening the way for further promising developments. Catalytic pyrolysis of Alcea pallida stems in a fixed-bed reactor for production of liquid bio-fuels was written by Aysu, Tevfik. And the article was included in Bioresource Technology in 2015.HPLC of Formula: 3386-33-2 This article mentions the following:

Pyrolysis of Alcea pallida stems was performed in a fixed-bed tubular reactor with and without catalyst at three different temperatures The effects of pyrolysis parameters including temperature and catalyst on the product yields were investigated. It was found that higher temperature resulted in lower liquid (bio-oil) and solid (bio-char) yields and higher gas yields. Catalysts had different effects on product yields and composition of bio-oils. Liquid yields were increased in the presence of zinc chloride and alumina but decreased with calcium hydroxide, tincal and ulexite. The highest bio-oil yield (39.35%) by weight including aqueous phase was produced with alumina catalyst at 500 掳C. The yields of bio-char, bio-oil and gas produced, as well as the compositions of the resulting bio-oils were determined by elemental anal., TGA, FT-IR and GC-MS. 160 different compounds were identified by GC-MS in the bio-oils obtained at 500 掳C. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are carcinogenic to humans and can be found in fuller’s earth used for the treatment of used transformer oil. This work describes an optimization of the Fenton process for the removal of contaminants from fuller’s earth. The effects of pH (2.5 and 4.0), [H2O2] (1.47 and 2.07 mol L-1), and [Fe2+] (1.7 and 40 mmol L-1) were studied. The Fenton process efficiency was monitored using the decreases in the COD (COD) and the concentrations of oil and grease, total carbon (TC), PCBs, and H2O2. The fuller’s earth contaminated with insulating oil presented 35% (weight/weight) of TC, 34% (weight/weight) of oil and grease, 297.0 g L-1 COD, and 64 mg of PCBs per kg. The material could therefore be considered a dangerous waste. After Fenton treatment, using a slurry mode, there was a removal of 55% of COD, 20% of oil and grease, and 20% of TC, achieved at pH 2.5 using 2.07 mol L-1 of H2O2 and 40.0 mmol L-1 of Fe2+. No PCBs were detected in the samples after the Fenton treatment, even using smaller amounts of Fenton reagents (1.47 mol L-1 of H2O2, 1.7 mmol L-1 of Fe2+, pH 2.5). The results indicated that the treated fuller’s earth was free from PCB residues and could be disposed of in a simple landfill, in accordance with Brazilian PCB regulations.
