In the presence of Fe(acac)3, α-pyrones such as 4,6-dimethyl-2-pyrone underwent stereoselective and chemoselective ring opening reactions with MeMgBr in Et2O at -60° to give (2Z)-2,4-pentadienoic acids such as (Z)-Me2C:CHCMe:CHCO2H in 68-94% yields and in 7:1->20:1 diastereoselectivities; if the reactions were warmed to ambient temperature during reaction, (E)-alkadienoic acids were isolated stereoselectively. The method was used to prepare the dodecadienamide natural product granulatamide B and a fragment of the marine natural product pateamine A.
