The present research paper reports the convenient synthesis, successful characterization, in vitro antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant potency and biocompatibility of N-acyl-morpholine-4-carbothioamides (5a-5j). The biocompatible derivatives were found to be highly active against the tested bacterial and fungal strains. Moreover, some of the screened N-acyl-morpholine-4-carbothioamides exhibited excellent antioxidant potential. Docking simulation provided additional information about possibilities of their inhibitory potential against RNA. It has been predicted by in silico investigation of the binding pattern that compounds 5a and 5j can serve as the potential surrogate for design of novel and potent antibacterial agents. The results for the in vitro bioassays were promising with the identification of compounds 5a and 5j as the lead and selective candidate for RNA inhibition. Results of the docking computations further ascertained the inhibitory potential of compound 5a. This result indicates that PVC can be completely decomposed by these solvents in the presence of oxygen. Here, we systematically investigated the synergistic effect of DMF and hydrochloric acid (HCl) on methylammonium (MA(+))-based perovskite films with the two-step spin-coating method. As a Lewis base, DMF coordinates well with Pb2+ to facilitate a decrease in the number of defects, thereby improving the carrier separation and transport, while HCl improves the overall perovskite film morphology. Addition of 20 mu L HCl/20 mu L DMF to 10 mL of methylammonium iodide/isopropyl alcohol solution afforded ca. 500 nm thick perovskite films with no observable defects within the grains. The process allowed fabrication of devices with an active area of 0.16 cm(2), which produced power conversion efficiencies up to 18.37% with minimal hysteresis.

In this paper, the behavior of concrete block under bilateral chloride ion diffusion in marine environment was studied, and the bilateral diffusion and unilateral diffusion of chloride ions in nanocomposite concrete and ordinary concrete were compared. The diffusion experiment equipment with different concentration on both sides was developed and a series of comparative experiments were carried out. Compared with ordinary concrete, nanotitania concrete has better resistance to chloride diffusion. In this work, we demonstrate that 1D EDPbli crystals containing face -sharing Pb164- octahedra are synthesized using ethylenediammonium (ED) as an organic cation in hydroiodic acid. Simple biodegradable plastic screen-printing for microfluidic paper-based analytical devices

The goal of using microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (mu PADs) in remote areas has prompted the development of uncomplicated, affordable, and environmentally-friendly fabrication methods. Here, screen-printed biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) as a simple, low-cost, and non-toxic alternative approach to create mu PADs was introduced. No need for a heating step contributed to low PCL dispersion resulting in high resolution hydrophobic barriers. The proposed method achieved a narrowest hydrophilic channel and hydrophobic edge of 510 +/- 40 mu m and 490 +/- 30 mu m, respectively. The method was used to generate several designs for Cr3+ and Cl- detections. For Cr3+ analysis, silver nanoparticles were used as the colorimetric probe to selectively measure Cr3+ using a spot format that achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 15.0 mu g L-1 and a linear working range of 50.0-1000.0 mu g L-1. For Cr determination, the distance-based pattern using traditional precipitation titration was utilized to resolve the coffee ring effect from colorimetric detection. The method gave an LOD and a linear range for Cr detection of 10.0 mg L-1 and 10.0-500.0 mg L-1, respectively. Finally, the mu PADs were applied for CF analysis in instant noodle seasonings and the results significantly agreed with those using the traditional titration at 95 % confidence.

Antibiotics, algal evaluations and subacute effects of abattoir wastewater on liver function enzymes, genetic and haematologic biomarkers in the freshwater fish, Clarias gariepinus

Abattoirs are positioned close to freshwaters in most developing countries where untreated wastewaters are discharged into with potential risk to aquatic life such as fish and ultimately human health. We assessed physicochemical parameters, antibiotics (oxytetracycline and diclofenac) and algal load of effluent collected from a major abattoir in Nigeria. Furthermore, liver function enzymes, genotoxic and haemotoxic effects of subacute concentration (10% of 96 hLC(50) value) of the wastewater were evaluated over a period of 28 d in Clarias gariepinus (The African Sharptooth Catfish). The 96 hLC(50) value of the abattoir wastewater against C. gariepinus was 154.14 mL/L (15.4%). Nitrates, phosphates, sulphates, chloride, ammonia, TDS, TSS, BOD5 and heavy metals (Fe and Pb) in the wastewater were above permissible limits while diclofenac and oxytetracycline were below detection limit (BDL). Microalgae in the wastewater were mostly Bacilliariophyta (Navicula spp.) (45.64%) and euglenoids (Euglena and Phacus spp.) (49.48%). Liver function enzymes (LDH, AST, ALT) level were higher in exposed fishes except for ALP which was lower at day 28 compared to control levels. Erythrocytic genotoxic indices (nuclear abnormalities) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the exposed fishes particularly at day 28 compared to control. Haematologic indices level such as WBC, MCV MCH, MCHC increased significantly (p < 0.05) while lymphocytes, HGB, RBC, HCT levels decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in the exposed C. gariepinus by day 28 compared to control. These results demonstrate potential adverse effects posed to aquatic fish species in the Ogun River by the discharge of the abattoir effluent. The microalgae species identified in the effluent may be explored for pre-treatment of the effluent before discharge in order to prevent eutrophication and increased pollutant load in the River. The study results will contribute to evidence-based environmental risk management of the River which is relevant to the UN SDGs 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and 14 (sustaining life below water). Promotive role of microRNA-150 in hippocampal neurons apoptosis in vascular dementia model rats

Cognitive impairment is one of the primary features of vascular dementia (VD). However, the specific mechanism underlying the regulation of cognition function in VD is not completely understood. The present study aimed to explore the effects of microRNA (miR)-150 on VD. To determine the effects of miR-150 on cognitive function and hippocampal neurons in VD model rats, rats were subjected to intracerebroventricular injections of miR-150 antagomiR. The Morris water maze test results demonstrated that spatial learning ability was impaired in VD model rats compared with control rats. Moreover, compared with antagomiR negative control (NC), miR-150 antagomiR alleviated cognitive impairment and enhanced memory ability in VD model rats. The triphenyltetrazolium chloride, Nissl staining and immunohistochemistry results further demonstrated that miR-150 knockdown improved the activity of hippocampal neurons in VD model rats compared with the antagomiR NC group. To validate the role of miR-150 in neurons in vitro, the PC12 cell line was used. The flow cytometry and Hoechst 33342/PI double staining results indicated that miR-150 overexpression significantly increased cell apoptosis compared with the mimic NC group. Moreover, the dual-luciferase reporter gene assay results indicated that miR-150 targeted HOXA1 and negatively regulated HOXA1 expression. Therefore, the present study indicated that miR-150 knockdown ameliorated VD symptoms by upregulating HOXA1 expression in vivo and in vitro.

Proposal and verification of a new isotherm based on exponential-asymptotic dependence between free and bound chlorides in reinforced concrete

The so-called isotherms represent the relationship between free and bound chlorides in the process of penetration of chloride ions in concrete structures. A new isotherm of the exponential-asymptotic type that corrects and improves the behavior of the classical four dependences in low porosity concrete subjected to high concentrations of chloride is present in this paper. The proposed isotherm has two advantages over the classic ones, in particular compared to that of Langmuir-Freundlich considered the most accurate. On the one hand, it contains only two coefficients so it is easy to adjust to the pairs (free chloride, bound chloride) obtained in experimental tests, on the other, it corrects the inflection contained in the initial stretch of Langmuir-Freundlich dependence. Data coming from experimental tests extracted from the scientific literature are used to fit the coefficients of all isotherms and long-term numerical simulations are performed to reproduce the concentration profiles and verify the consistent and precise behavior of the proposed isotherm to predict the first stage of the service life of the reinforced concrete structures.
