In this study, the yeasticidal and fungicidal activity benzalkonium chloride (BZC), sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) and TBO with red light were examined using quantitative suspension tests. All three biocides were highly effective against Candida albicans and > 5 center dot 0 log(10) reductions in viability were attainable within 5 minutes. Wild-type A. brasiliensis conidia were highly tolerant to treatment and 0 center dot 4 log(10) reductions in viability were observed within the same time frame when treated with TBO or BZC. NaDCC was markedly more effective. Inhibition of melanin biosynthesis by culturing with 100 mu g ml(-1) kojic acid resulted in a hypopigmented phenotype with significantly increased sensitivity to all three biocides. These observations indicate that melanin is a significant contributor towards A. brasiliensis tolerance of biocides and photosensitizers and demonstrate that cationic biocides are poorly suited to applications where the control of A. brasiliensis is required.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of dexpanthenol on nerve healing following neurorrhaphy in lacerated peripheral nerves. A total of 30 mature Sprague Dawley rats were used. Surgical sciatic nerve dissection and repair was performed on an experimental group of 20 rats. The remaining 10 rats were designated as the control group. Electrophysiological evaluation of compound muscle action potential (CMAP) indicated that the CMAP level in the SDPL group was significantly higher than that of the SSLE group (P<0.001), and the CMAP latency period was lower in the SDPL group compared with the SSLE group (P<0.001). In addition, the SDPL group malondialdehyde level was significantly lower than that of the SSLE group (P<0.001). Functional evaluation with an inclined plane test revealed a significant difference between the SSLE (39.6 +/- 5.5 degrees) and SDPL (79.1 +/- 6.93 degrees) groups (P<0.001). Effectiveness of a formulation containing peptides and vitamin C in treating signs of facial ageing: three clinical studies

Objective Vitamin C and peptides are widely used in cosmetic products but there is a paucity of clinical studies showing that the formulations are effective in treating signs of facial ageing. These 3 clinical studies evaluated the effectiveness of an anti-ageing formula containing natural vitamin C (10%), biopeptides (rice and lupin), hyaluronic acid, and Vichy volcanic mineralising water, in amber glass ampoules with no preservatives (Peptide-C ampoules). Methods Dansyl chloride fluorescence labelling compared cell turnover for Peptide-C ampoules vs untreated skin in 32 female subjects. Study 2, an open clinical study, evaluated the efficacy on wrinkles of Peptide-C ampoules by investigator clinical scoring based on Dynamical Atlas visual assessment (N = 40) and subject self-assessment questionnaires (N = 47). Study 3, an open clinical study, evaluated wrinkles by instrumental quantification with 3D fringe projection analysis (N = 40) and subject questionnaires (N = 51). Results The mean cell turnover was faster for skin treated with Peptide-C ampoules compared to untreated skin (17.1 days vs. 19.2 days; P < 0.0001). In study 2, after 28 days application of Peptide-C ampoules, clinical grading of crow's-feet wrinkles, forehead wrinkles and nasolabial folds decreased by 9%, 11% and 5%, respectively (all P < 0.05 vs baseline). Of 47 subjects, 77%, 64% and 79% indicated their skin seemed smoothed out, fine lines were less visible, and skin complexion was more radiant, respectively. Selective-cerebral-hypothermia-induced neuroprotection against-focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury is associated with an increase in SUMO2/3 conjugation

Selective cerebral hypothermia is considered an effective treatment for neuronal injury after stroke and avoids the complications of general hypothermia. Several recent studies hanve suggested that SUMO2/3 conjugation occurs following cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the relationship between the cerebral protective effect of selective cerebral hypothermia and SUMO2/3 conjugation remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of selective cerebral hypothermia on SUMO2/3 conjugation during focal cerebral I/R injury. A total of 140 Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups. In the sham group, only the carotid artery was exposed. The endoluminal filament technique was used to induce middle cerebral artery occlusion in the other three groups. After 2 h of occlusion, the filaments were slowly removed to allow blood reperfusion in the I/R group. In the hypothermia (HT) group and normothermia (NT) group, normal saline at 4 degrees C and 37 degrees C, respectively , was perfused through the carotid artery, followed by the restoration of blood flow. The results of the modified neurological severity score (mNSS), 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining demonstrated that selective cerebral hypothermia significantly decreased I/R-induced neuronal injury (mNSS, n = 8, 24 h, HT (5.88 +/- 2.36) vs. I/R (8.63 +/- 3.38), P < 0.05. 48 h, HT (5.75 +/- 2.25) vs. I/R (8.5 +/- 2.88), P < 0.05. Recovery of pure germanium oxide from Zener diodes using a recyclable ionic liquid Cyphos IL 104

A novel process is developed for the recovery of germanium from the leach liquor of Zener diodes using solvent extraction. Extraction is carried out using a phosphonium ionic liquid, Cyphos IL 104, as an extractant. Preliminary investigations carried out on Ge(IV) extraction using Cyphos IL 104 include influence of various parameters like temperature, equilibration time, and concentration of extractant, chloride ion, and acid on the distribution of Ge(IV). NMR spectrum of Ge(IV)-extractant complex was analyzed to support the proposed extracting species of germanium. Quantitative extraction of germanium is achieved from 7 mol/L HCl onwards using 0.1 mol/L Cyphos IL 104. Optimum conditions for quantitative extraction of Ge from leach liquor of Zener diodes were developed. McCabe-Thiele plots were constructed for the extraction and stripping of Ge(IV) from leach liquor to determine the number of stages required at a particular aqueous/organic phase ratio. Separation of germanium from copper, mercury and iron has been achieved by selective stripping of these metal ions. Germanium is recovered as germanium oxide from the strip solution using NaOH as a precipitating agent. The synthesized germanium oxide is characterized by XRD, FE-SEM and EDX techniques.

Electromagnetic wave absorption performance of magnesium phosphate cement functionalized by nano-Fe3O4 magnetic fluid and hollow glass microspheres

In light of high bonding and early strengths, magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) functionalized with nano-Fe3O4 magnetic fluid and hollow glass microspheres (HGM) that exhibited excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance (EWAP) was fabricated in this study. Coating a construction surface with multifunctional MPC could effectively withstand electromagnetic radiation hazards. Effects of the Fe3O4-like ferrite content and type (i.e., nano-Fe3O4 magnetic fluid, nano-Fe3O4 particles and magnetite), and the surface roughness of specimens on the EWAP of the MPC were investigated by lab tests. Test results showed that the Fe3O4-like ferrite greatly improved the EWAP of the MPC and the enhancement effectiveness was in descending order of nano-Fe3O4 magnetic fluid > nano-Fe3O4 particles > magnetite. Among the samples tested in this study, MPC blended with 5 wt% nano-Fe3O4 magnetic fluid showed an optimal EWAP as indicated by a peak reflection loss of -11.2 dB and bandwidth of 9.67 GHz below -10 dB. Additionally, the reflection loss of the MPC in the high frequency range could be further improved by carving notches on the surface to increase the number of microwave reflections. The electromagnetic energy absorbing mechanism and the hydration progress of the MPC were further analyzed with SEM/EDS and XRD results. The hydration degree of the MPC got improved due to the lubricating effect of HGM and filling effect of nano-Fe3O4 magnetic fluid, which also optimized its micro structure and compressive and flexural strengths. From this study, the nano-Fe3O4 magnetic fluid and HGM modified MPC had potential application in the construction of buildings for enhanced resistance to electromagnetic radiation. Self-healing of early-age cracks in cement mortars with artificial functional aggregates

Cracking seriously affects the functionality and durability of the concrete structure. Therefore, the development of robust self-healing concrete is important to extend the service life of the structure. In this study, artificial functional aggregates with fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, limestone powder and sodium carbonate powder were designed and prepared by the powder granulation technology to promote the self-healing efficiency of concrete. Mortar specimens with artificial functional aggregates which partially replaced the sand were prepared to verify the feasibility of the approach. Crack self-healing efficiency was evaluated by visual observation and the water ingress test. In addition, healing products formed in the crack were analyzed with XRD, TG and SEM, respectively. Experimental results indicated that the artificial functional aggregates were well combined with the mortar matrix and could be intersected by cracking. The addition of artificial functional aggregates improved the self-healing capacity of mortar specimens. Mortar specimens with artificial functional aggregates exhibited higher closure ratio of surface crack and better regain of water tightness compared with the control specimens. The maximum crack width that can be healed was about 0.47 mm in the mortar specimen with artificial functional aggregates. Microstructure investigation showed that the major healing products in the crack mouth were calcite precipitations which firstly deposited on both walls of the crack and then gradually overlapped together to become denser and denser with the extension of healing time. More calcium carbonate precipitations were observed in internal crack of mortars with artificial functional aggregates compared to the control mortar due to the effective supply of carbonate ions from the artificial functional aggregates. Regulatory influences of methyl jasmonate and calcium chloride on chilling injury of banana fruit during cold storage and ripening

Fruit quality is preserved through cold storage, but climacteric fruits are prone to chilling injury (CI) which limits their shelf life and marketability. Two postharvest treatments, 1 mM methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and 4% (wt/vol) calcium chloride (Ca2+), were separately used to investigate their influences on chilling injury (CI) incidence and fruit quality in unpacked banana cultivar Grand Nain during cold storage and subsequent ripening. Banana fruits were dipped for 2 min in aqueous emulsions containing 1% Tween-80-used here as a surfactant with untreated fruits being used as control. Fruits were stored at 10 +/- 2 or optimal 14 +/- 2 degrees C temperature and relative humidity 85%-90% for a 20-day cold storage period and then removed from cold storage at 5, 10, 15, and 20 days followed by ripening at 22 +/- 2 degrees C. Treatments with MeJA or Ca2+ significantly reduced CI in banana fruit during cold storage and subsequent ripening temperature. Untreated controls exhibited increased CI, weight loss, and decreased hue angle, as well as firmness. In contrast, the aforementioned changes were considerably delayed after treatments with MeJA or Ca2+. Application of MeJA or Ca2+ also increased total phenolic compound contents and maintenance of total antioxidant activity throughout cold storage and during ripening periods as compared to that of the control. These findings indicate that coating bananas with 1 mM MeJA or 4% (wt/vol) Ca2+ can improve the postharvest quality and shelf life of fruits, and it can ameliorate chilling injury during cold storage and at ripening temperature.
