The effect of natural and artificial periphytic substrates with biofloc system on shrimp Penaeus vannamei (Boone 1931) culture: growth and immune response

A 120-day experiment was conducted to understand the growth and immunomodulatory response of Penaeus vannamei reared in biofloc-integrated periphyton system-like natural substrates like bamboo (NS1), sugarcane bagasse (NS2), artificial substrates like polyvinyl chloride mat (AS1), agricultural shed net (AS2), and a control group without biofloc and substrate. Experiments were carried out in 500-L fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) tanks at a stocking density of 100 nos/m(3) (0.256 g). Shrimps reared in natural substrate-based treatments, (NS1 and NS2) recorded highest average body weight (ABW) and survival followed by artificial ones (AS1 and AS2), and were significantly higher (P < 0.01) compared with control. Significantly higher chlorophyll(a), ash-free dry matter (AFDM), and THB load were recorded in NS (1 and 2) followed by AS (1 and 2). Contrastingly, the Vibrio load was higher in control than treatments. Relative percentage survival was higher (P < 0.01) in treatments when challenged against V. parahaemolyticus. Serum protein level, phenoloxidase activity, and superoxide dismutase assay were significantly higher in natural and artificial substrate groups when compared to control. Immunomodulatory effects through immune gene study revealed a two fold to four fold upregulation in cytMn-SOD and mtMn-SOD genes in NS groups. Similarly, the lysozyme and prophenoloxidase genes were significantly upregulated in the treatment groups. The results conclude that biofloc with natural followed by artificial periphytic substrates were observed to deliver better performances, protective response, and immunomodulatory effects in pacific white shrimp P. vannamei culture. Investigation of the surface properties of dibutyl amine modified poly(styrene) based polymer by inverse gas chromatography method

In the present study, poly(vinyl benzyl chloride) (PVBC) was prepared by the radical polymerization method. Then, PVBC was reacted with dibutyl amine to obtain tertiary amine-modified poly(styrene) based polymer (PVBC-Dibutyl amine) and the resulting polymer was characterized. Surface properties of the polymer were investigated by inverse gas chromatography method at infinite dilution region. For this purpose, the retention diagrams of carefully selected polar and non-polar solvents (probes) on PVBC-Dibutyl amine were obtained over a temperature range from 30 to 50 degrees C. By using the diagrams, the dispersive component of the surface free energy of the polymer surface was calculated for the studied temperatures by two different methods. The specific enthalpy of adsorption and the specific component of the adsorption free energy of solvents on PVBC-Dibutyl amine which are adsorption thermodynamic parameters were determined for each solvent used. Using the adsorption data, Lewis acid and Lewis base parameters of PVBC-Dibutyl amine surface were calculated. The obtained parameters reflected that surface of PVBC-Dibutyl amine exhibited a basic behavior. Considering the values in the literature, the effect of dibutyl amine moieties in the structure of poly(styrene) based polymer PVBC-Dibutyl amine on the dispersive surface free energy and acid-base parameters of poly(styrene) was discussed.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Chaihu-Longgu-Muli Decoction (CLMD) is a classic prescription created by Zhong-jing Zhang, a famous ancient Chinese medical scientist, to harmonize uncontrollable body activities and calm the minds. Now Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physicians often apply it to treat psychiatric diseases such as epilepsy. Aim of the study: This study investigated the mechanism of the effect of Chaihu-Longgu-Muli Decoction (CLMD) on hippocampal neurons pyroptosis in rats with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE). Materials and methods: The lithium chloride-pilocarpine-induced TLE rat model was established. The behavioral testing was performed and, the expression of IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha in serum was detected by ELISA, qRT-PCR was used to detect the mRNA expression of NLRP3, Caspase-1, IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha in hippocampus. The expression of NLRP3 and Caspase-1 in hippocampal dentate gyrus was detected by immunofluorescence assay. Results: CLMD could significantly suppress the frequency and duration time of epileptic seizures, reduce the expression of NLRP3, Caspase-1 TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta. Conclusions: CLMD exerted an obvious antiepileptic effect by improving pyroptosis in hippocampal neurons of TLE rats.

Synthesis, characterization, crystal structure and bioactivity properties of the benzimidazole-functionalized PEPPSI type of Pd(II)NHC complexes

Herein, six new benzimidazole-functionalized Pd-based complexes bearing N-propylphthalimide group were synthesized. These new PEPPSI type of Pd(II)NHC complexes (PEPPSI: Pyridine Enhanced Precatalyst Preparation, Stabilization and Initiation) were prepared from the N-propylphthalimide substituted benzimidazolium salts, palladium chloride (PdCl2) and 3-chloropyridine. The structures of all (NHC)PdX2(3-chloropyridine) complexes have been clearly characterized by using NMR (H-1 and C-13), FTIR spectroscopic method, and elemental analysis techniques. Also, the structures of three of the (NHC)PdX2(3-chloropyridine) complexes were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Also, novel N-propylphthalimide-substituted (NHC)PdX 2 (3-chloropyridine) complexes effectively inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE), with Ki values in the range of 0.54 +/- 0.10 to 3.01 +/- 0.63 mu M. For butyryl-cholinesterase (BChE) was obtained with Ki values in the range of 0.82 +/- 0.11 to 5.03 +/- 0.86 mu M. For alpha-glycosidase (alpha-Gly) the most effective Ki values of 1c, 1d, and 1b were with Ki values of 23.83 +/- 5.98, 26.04 +/- 7.11, and 30.61 +/- 3.85 mu M, respectively. Meso-scale mechanical deterioration of mortar subjected to freeze thaw cycles and sodium chloride attack

This paper aims to quantitatively examine the effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) on the frost-induced mechanical deterioration of mortar. After the freeze thaw cycles (FTCs), the mechanical properties of sealed specimens (70 x 30 x 5 mm) saturated with NaCl solutions were investigated. As found, the specimens with a lower water-to-cement ratio (W/C) show no clear reductions in their flexural strength and elastic modulus, while those with a higher W/C degrade gradually with increasing numbers of FTCs, even for specimens exposed to high NaCl concentrations. The connectivity of the specimens increased significantly with increasing numbers of FTCs for the pure frost damage case, whereas this variation was minimal for the case of frost damage incurred with higher NaCl concentrations. For the specimens exposed to higher NaCl concentrations, the destructive salt crystallization pressure under freezing was the main contributor to the salt frost damage and was largely attributed to the reversible formation of Friedel’ s salt.

Synthesis of zinc hydroxystannate/reduced graphene oxide composites using chitosan to improve poly(vinyl chloride) performance

Chitosan-modified zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS-CS) was synthesized using the cations of the biomaterial chitosan (CS) and ion replacement strategy. A ZHS-CS and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid flame retardant (ZHS-CS/rGO) was synthesized for use in flexible poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC). Scanning electron microscopy images indicated that ZHS-CS and rGO were evenly dispersed in ZHS-CS/rGO without agglomeration. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that rGO was fully reduced. The flame-retardant and mechanical properties of PVC composites were investigated using the limiting oxygen index (LOI), a cone calorimeter, and mechanical equipment. By replacing one-fifth of the zinc ions in ZHS by chitosan cations to obtain Sn-4Zn-1CS/rGO, the ZHS-CS/rGO was found to improve PVC composite performance. The total heat release and total smoke release of PVC/Sn-4Zn-1CS/rGO were reduced by 24.2 and 40.0 %, respectively, from those of pure PVC.

Predictive retention study of beta-blockers in different chromatographic systems as potential tool for lipophilicity screening based on QSRR approach

The chromatographic analysis of a number of beta-blockers on different thin-layer chromatography (TLC) systems was carried out. The analysis was done on three different systems, namely normal phase, paraffin oil impregnated in methylene chloride and n-hexane as two types of reversed phase systems. This represents an economic and environmental approach pathway for the determination of four solvents systems of two components were used to get the retention parameters and the pH was adjusted using ammonia and glacial acetic acid. Quantitative structure-retention relationship (QSRR) was applied to the different phases and 315 molecular descriptors has been calculated for each beta-blocker. A contingency analysis has been used to declare the highest correlation between the chromatographic retention and the calculated descriptors, which resulted in obtaining different models for each system used. The produced models correlate the predicted retention to the experimental one in a significant way which could be useful for the future behavior prediction of this group of beta-blockers against normal and reversed phase TLC systems.

Enhancement of the corrosion inhibition of carbon fibre via the effect of the chloride ions on its anodic corrosion

The results of this study showed the beneficial effect of chloride ion to enhance the corrosion inhibition and prevent direct oxidation of carbon fibres under anodic polarization. The corrosion rate of carbon fibre sharply decreased after introducing chloride ions. Uniaxial tensile test performed after the simulated ICCP tests showed that the tensile strength of the carbon fibre bundles was higher when the electrolyte contained chloride ions. Solvent and catalyst-free synthesis of two bis-phosphonic acids were realized adopting one-pot reaction of 2,6-bis (hydroxymethyl)-4-methoxyphenol or 4-chloro- 2,6-bis (hydroxymethyl) phenol with trialkyl phosphite. Their structures were confirmed by H-1, C-13, P-31 NMR and IR spectroscopies. The molecular structures have been optimized using DFT, and the related calculated vibrational frequencies and NMR shift confirm the proposed structures. Chemical and electrochemical tests evaluated the inhibitive capabilities on the XC48 steel corrosion against 1 M HCl. The weight loss (chemical one) shows that the adsorption on the XC48 steel surface obeys to Langmuir isotherm, while the polarization measurements suggest that the inhibition process is mixt, the results of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) prove an increase of the inhibition efficiency with the increase of inhibitor concentrations. The surface topographies were analyzed by the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The Density Functional Theory (DFT) with B3LYP as correlation function and 6-31G (p, d) as basis sets were used to determine some theoretical physic-chemical parameters affecting the corrosion inhibition and on the other hand the DFT develop the Frontier Molecular Orbitals (FMOs) and the Molecular Electrostatic Potentials (MEP) and through a discussion was made about their relationship with the inhibition of the corrosion. At the end, Molecular Dynamics Simulations (MDS) based on Monte-Carlo calculations were accomplished to simulate the interface configuration between the inhibitor molecules and Fe (110)/H2O.
