A novel turn-on fluorometric reporter-spacer-receptor chemosensor based on calix[4]arene scaffold for detection of cyanate anion

Herein, a novel calix[4]arene compound, which was modified by the 2-(2-aminophenyl)benzothiazole fragment with cyanate recognition function was designed based on the reporter-spacer-receptor sensing system. The construction was done via two-step reaction, and the desired sensor 4 was characterized by FT-IR, H-1-, C-13-NMR, and fluorescence spectroscopy along with HRMS data. The sensor candidate showed distinct fluorometric cyanate detection by means of reporter feature of selected benzothiazole constituent. In the presence of cyanate, the sensor gave a turn-on-type fluorescence at 482 nm with a large stokes’ shift. Furthermore, it was observed that our fluoroionophore 4 is highly selective toward cyanate over remaining anions such as sulfate, phosphate, fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, chlorate, and nitrate in 10% aqueous solution of DMSO. The 1:2 stoichiometric ratio of the 4-cyanate complex was given the best fit with Job’s plot based on the titration data. The association constant (K-a) of sensor 4 with cyanate is determined to be 1.64 x 10(5) M-2. The obtained limit of detection (LOD) value for cyanate anion, 312 nM, clearly revealed the remarkable sensitivity of the chemosensor 4. Microplastic abundance, distribution, and composition in the surface water and sediments of the Yangtze River along Chongqing City, China

Purpose Microplastics are considered emerging pollutants and already currently present in measurable quantities in aquatic ecosystems. However, information on the current status of microplastic pollution in the upper Yangtze River, the most important water body in China, is insufficient. In the present study, the abundance and distribution of microplastics in the surface water and sediments were investigated to obtain the characteristics of microplastic pollution in Yangtze River along Chongqing City. Materials and methods Ten sampling sites along Yangtze River in the Chongqing urban area were selected to collect surface water and sediment samples. Abundance and morphological characteristics of microplastics were determined by counting using a digital stereo microscope. Micro-Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (mu-FTIR) analysis was used to identify polymer type of the microplastics. Results and discussion The abundance of microplastics ranged within 46.7-204 n L-1 and 100-583 n kg(-1) dw (dry weight) in the surface water and sediment samples, respectively. Fibers and films were dominant in most of samples, and the average proportion of fibers reached 74.3% in surface water. Whether in surface water or sediments, most of the microplastics were less than 0.7 mm in size, and the average proportion of microplastics with a size of less than 0.3 mm reached 62.6% in the sediment samples. Moreover, fibrous and small were the primary characteristics of the microplastics. Polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, high-density polyethylene, polyester, and wool fibers were identified in the surface water samples. Conclusion The Yangtze River along Chongqing City is contaminated by microplastic, like many urban rivers. Anthropogenic activities, including sewage treatment effluents, might be the main sources of microplastic pollution in Yangtze River (Chongqing urban section). This study reveals the contamination and characteristics of microplastics in the Yangtze River along Chongqing and supplies important data for further research on microplastics in Yangtze River’s basin.

Application of deep eutectic solvents as a green and biodegradable media for extraction of anthocyanin from black carrots

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) not only could keep a high extraction efficiency, but also could easily be applied to pharmaceutical and food products. This study aimed to set out an eco-friendly technique for the anthocyanin extraction from natural sources. In this study, DESs coupled with ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) were considered as an alternative green method to classical applications. The choline chloride-based DESs was prepared with the hydrogen bond donor. The conventional, UAE and DES extraction methods were studied and compared. Citric acid was selected as the most promising hydrogen bond donor for the preparation of DES. The results showed that the biodegradability of all tested DESs was >80% after 28 days. Based on the analyses, it could therefore be assumed that all of the analysed DESs were biodegradable green solvents. The results of FT-IR revealed that pure choline chloride demonstrated several functional groups and many of these functional groups coexisted after DES formation. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that all the DESs and their components were degraded in a single stage and the polymeric colour ratio was lower if acid was present in the DES composition. The results indicated that the developed method could be regarded as a sustainable, effective, and green approach for anthocyanin extraction.

Electrochemical immunosensor based on self-assembled gold nanorods for label-free and sensitive determination of Staphylococcus aureus

An electrochemical immunosensor based on self-assembled gold nanorods on glassy carbon electrode was developed for label-free and sensitive detection of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The gold nanorods were firstly assembled on the electrode surface by using poly-(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) as the linkers, followed by the functionlization of anti -S. aureus antibodies. The immobilized antibodies on self-assembled gold nanorods could efficiently capture S. aureus to the modified electrode by the specific immune reaction, which clearly blocked the electron transfer of electrochemical probes on the electrode surface due to the resistance of S. aureus. Atomic force microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to verify the stepwise assembly of the immunosensor fabrication. The immunosensor could detect S. aureus in a linear range from 1.8 x 10(3) to 1.8 x 10(7) CFU mL(-1) with a low detection limit of 2.4 x 10(2) CFU mL(-1). Furthermore, the designed electrochemical immunosensor was successfully used to determine S. aureus in milk samples with acceptable results. The proposed immunosensor could be further expanded to sensitive detect other pathogens with the addition of specific antibodies.

Background This systematic review discusses a clinical physiology aspect of chloride in fluid therapy. Crystalloid solutions are one of the most widely used remedies. While generally used in medicine for almost 190 years, studies focused largely on their safety have only been published since the new millennium. The K+ dietary treatment reduced (P < 0.05) feed intake and BWG when compared to K- during the starter and grower period. The K+ dietary treatment decreased blood Na (mmol/L), blood glucose (mg/dl), ionized blood Ca (mg/dl), TCO2 (mmol/L), blood HCO3 (mmol/L), and base excess in extracellular fluid (mmol/L) when compared to K- birds of similar body weight at 35 days of age (P <= 0.05). Fine limestone diets tended to reduce WB scores (3.0 vs. 2.59) when compared to coarse limestone diets at 35 days of age (P = 0.08). This study demonstrated that using 0.2% of K as potassium carbonate did not negatively affect FCR even though FI and BWG were reduced. Flexural behaviour of reinforced concrete beams repaired using a hybrid scheme with stainless steel rebars and CFRP sheets

The repair of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) structures is a critical issue for structural designers and managers because the repair cost significantly dominates the life-cycle cost. Moreover, in chloride-containing environments (e.g. coastal environments), RC structures repaired with conventional methods may corrode again since the ingress of chloride ions, water, and oxygen into the concrete will not be completely restrained. In this paper, a novel repair method for corroded RC beams using stainless steel (SS) rebars and externally bonded carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets is proposed. The flexural behaviour of a group of RC beams repaired using the proposed method is experimentally investigated. The test variables include the longitudinal reinforcement types (i.e. carbon and SS), shear reinforcement configurations, and CFRP sheet wrapping schemes. Experimental results demonstrate that a carbon steel (CS) reinforcement can be replaced with an SS reinforcement to reduce future repair costs since there is no significant difference in the flexural behaviour of beams reinforced with CS and SS rebars. The effectiveness of CFRP sheet wrapping schemes on the flexural performances of SS-RC beams is approximately identical to that of CS-RC beams. In addition, the present paper discusses the serviceability and ultimate limit states of RC beams retrofitted with SS rebars and CFRP sheets based on the current design codes for ordinary RC beams strengthened using CFRP sheets. Osteoclastogenesis and sphingosine-1-phosphate secretion from human osteoclast precursor monocytes are modulated by the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator

Osteopenia and increased fracture rates are well-recognized in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) disease. In CF pathology, F508del is the most common CFTR mutation, with more than 85% of patients carrying it on at least one allele. The underlying molecular defect in CFTR caused by the F508del-CFTR mutation in osteoclastogenesis, i.e., on the generation and bone-resorption activity of osteoclasts (OCs) from peripheral blood-derived monocytes (PBMCs) remained unexplored. We therefore investigated whether the F508del mutation could affect the osteoclastogenic capacity of PBMCs collected from 15 adult patients bearing the F508de1-CFTR mutation, to modulate their bone-resorptive abilities and the level of sphingosine-1 -phosphate (S1P) produced by OCs, a key factor in the bone mineral density and formation. In the present study, a severe, defective differentiation of CF-F508del PBMCs to CF-F508del OCs without any significant difference in nuclei number per OC was found compared to non-CF healthy PBMCs from 13 subjects after 7-14-days culture periods. We observed a reduced number of formed non-CF healthy OCs in the presence of a selective inhibitor of CFTR chloride conductance (CFTR-Inh(172)). Our data regarding OCs resorptive capabilites revealed that a loss of CFTR chloride activity in OCs led to a marked reduction in their trench-resorption mode. A 7-fold increase of the SlP release by CF-F508del OCs was found compared to non-CF healthy OCs after a 21-days culture period. We hypothesize that defective maturation of F508del-OCs precursor monocytes associated with high S1 P production in the bone environment might contribute to low bone mineral density observed in the CF population.

Design and characterization of a chloride-free organic copper solution: Electrochemical synthesis of Zn/Cu/Sn precursor stack for CZTS-based photoconversion devices

In the present study, an ethylene glycol-based electrolyte is used to electrodeposit copper onto zinc for the synthesis of the Zn/Cu/Sn stack, precursor of Cu2ZnSnS4. The employed solution contains diethanolamine (DEA) which supports the formation of amine-complexes, whose features are studied by UV-vis absorption, ESI-MS, and FTIR measurements, providing insight on the optimal concentration of DEA for copper complexation. Cyclic voltammetries (CVs) are carried out at increasing [DEA]/[Cu2+] ratios, highlighting the amine effect on the reduction potential of the copper species. The displacement reaction between copper and zinc is investigated by immersion potential measurements, showing a direct correlation to the voltammetric data. The optimized copper solution resulted in a negligible displacement contribution, allowing the electrochemical synthesis of Mo-(sub)/Zn/Cu/Sn stack on a relatively large area (4 cm(2)). The metallic precursor is analyzed by SEM/EDS, AFM, XRD, and GDOES techniques. Finally, the kesterite CZTS phase is obtained through reactive annealing with elemental sulfur and it is characterized by SEM/EDS, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy. Photoelectrochemical water splitting on CZTS/CdS/Pt heterostructure is carried out in an aqueous solution at pH 6.85, showing a photocurrent of -5.05 mA/cm(2) at 0 V vs RHE.
