In this study, the effect of calcium ions (Ca2+) on the heat stability and rheology of high-calorie (>1.0 kcal/mL) whey protein emulsion (HCWPE) was investigated. The mass fractions of carbohydrate, lipid and protein in the emulsions were 20, 6, and 6 wt%, respectively. It was found that there was little difference in stability and rheology between emulsions (unheated) of different concentrations of Ca2+. The particle size and flocculation degree increased rapidly when the Ca2+ concentration was above 1.5 mM, and absolute.-potential decreased. The change of 3-week particle size and backscattering showed that the emulsion had better storage stability when the Ca2+ concentration was below 1.5 mM. Another interesting result was that after the high temperature sterilization, the rheological behavior of HCWPE changed from shear-thickening to shearthinning with increase in Ca2+ concentration. It could be explained that free Ca2+ continued to bind with protein during the shearing process. The present study would provide a theoretical reference for calcium fortified functional drinks.

Ginger rhizomes have been reportedly used in folk medicine for the management of various ailments. This study, therefore, investigates the ameliorative effect of the ethanolic extract of ginger (Zingiber officinale) rhizomes against DNA damage in rats induced with different carcinogens. Fifteen Wistar rats grouped into 3 of 5 rats per group were used for the study. The first set of blood samples was first collected before the animals were orally treated with heavy metals. After 14 days of induction, the second set of blood was collected. The third phase of blood collection was done after administering an ethanolic extract of Z. officinale for 14 days. The UV wavelength absorption spectrum and conventional PCR analysis were carried out on DNA extracts of all the animals. Cluster analysis of optical density (OD) and PCR data were carried out as well as genomic instability, similarity, and diversity using the best 3 Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers. The PCR -DNA concentration analysis showed the Z. officinale extract’s ameliorative effect against lead acetate, cadmium chloride, and arsenic trioxide- induced DNA damage with a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in DNA concentration of the treated rats when compared with induced rats. The cluster analysis of optical density values revealed close similarity between the control animals' DNA, a slight similarity with treated animals' DNA, and a significant difference with the induced animal DNA. A Promoted Mesoporous Silica-Based Material for SO2 Adsorption

Mesoporous materials have been widely used in the adsorption of air pollutants because of their uniform pore structure and large specific surface area. In this study, hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride and tetramethylammonium hydroxide pentahydrate were used as structure-directing agents, silica as a silicon source, and tetramethylammonium silicate as a functional group to prepare a mesoporous silica-based material (MSBM) by a designed hydrothermal reaction. The synthetic materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FITR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption efficiency of MSBM for SO2 in simulated flue gas under different conditions was studied. The results showed that the structure of the MSBM was the hexagonally ordered MCM-41 structure. It had the characteristics of uniform appearance, large specific surface area, rich surface groups, and strong thermal stability. The static activity of SO2 in flue gas could reach 32.1 mg/g under optimal conditions, which was slightly inferior to activated carbon. Therefore, MSBM has great practical application potential in the treatment of SO2 in flue gas.

Automated measurement of pH-dependent solid-liquid equilibria of itaconic acid and protocatechuic acid

Crystallization is a highly selective unit operation capable of separating target molecules from complex media. Its design requires precise solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE) data. The SLE of platform chemicals like carboxylic acids in complex aqueous media depends on temperature, pH value as well as on present side components, but predominantly, only the solubility for different temperatures is reported. This work presents a novel automated method for the determination of the pH- and temperature-dependent SLE in complex media using readily available laboratory equipment. Taking the example of itaconic acid, the pH-dependent solubility for different temperatures is measured and validated with results obtained from the classic excess solid method along with literature data. Using the automated setup, the influence of different loadings of sodium chloride on the SLE of itaconic acid is investigated and a correlation between solubility and concentration of the electrolyte is derived. The SLE data acquired for protocatechuic acid in fermentation medium demonstrates the applicability of the method for the determination of comprehensive SLE in multicomponent mixtures without the requirement of specific analytical methods for the target compound. The resulting SLE data can be used for a more precise design and techno-economic evaluation of crystallization processes in biotechnological production routes. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
