In this study, we demonstrate the generation of soliton mode-locked pulses from an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) cavity configured with 8-Hydroxyquinolino cadmium chloride hydrate (8-HQCdCl(2)H(2)O) based saturable absorber (SA). The thin-film of 8-HQCdCl(2)H(2)O was prepared by embedding the 8-HQCdCl2H2O into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The soliton mode-locked of EDFL was obtained from laser cavities lengths of 33 m, 53 m, and 103 m. These EDFL cavities of 33m, 53 m and 103 m show repetition rate (pulse width) of 5.6 MHz (950 fs), 3.6 MHz(1.02 ps), and 1.9 MHz (1.53 ps), respectively, at maximum input power of 167 mW. The presence of Kelly sidebands in optical spectrum was obvious with of EDFL cavity 33 m. This indicates that the pulse operation was shifted from stretched pulse to soliton regime with the reduction of cavity length. The soliton mode-locked laser operated at 1563 nm with the shortest pulse width of 950 fs and thus it could be applied in optical communications.

Amino-functionalized cellulose particles with a porous structure were prepared by a solvent-releasing method with 1-butyl-3-methylimdazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) followed by an amination reaction, and were incorporated with silica. Processing of end-of-life products (EoL) containing rare earth elements (REE) has gained increasing importance in recent years with the aim of avoiding supply risks. In addition, circular economy renders complete recirculation of technology metals mandatory. Fluorescent lamp wastes are an important source for REE recovery since they contain significant amounts, up to 55 wt%, of Y and Eu in red phosphors. For these purposes, solid-state chlorination (SSC) is an economically attractive alternative to wet acid leaching treatment, which profits from a considerable reduction of chemicals consumption and process costs. Chlorination takes place with dry HCl(g) produced from thermal decomposition of NH4Cl(s), not only converting the REE content of the Hg-free phosphor waste into water soluble REE metal chlorides, but also avoiding the implications of aqueous complex chemistry of REE. To establish an industrial process viable on a commercial scale, the SSC process has been optimized by (i) using a design of experiment (DOE) varying temperature, residence time, and g(NH4Cl)/g(solid) ratio and (ii) improved leaching of the chlorinated metals with an organic mixture selective for REE. As a result, 95.7% of the Y and 92.2% of the Eu were selectively recovered at 295.9 degrees C, 67 min and a ratio of 1.27 g(NH4Cl)/g(solid), followed by quantitative selective leaching of the REE. Thermodynamic properties of some neoteric three-component deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and their mixture with water are of great practical and fundamental importance in various fields of sciences. In this work the measurements of density and speed of sound data for neat four DESs (choline chloride/lactic acid/ethylene glycol, choline chloride/lactic acid/glycerol, choline chloride/oxalic acid/ethylene glycol and choline chloride/oxalic acid/glycerol) and their aqueous mixture were carried out over the entire composition range at T = (288.15 to 318.15) K. Some of the thermodynamic properties including the excess molar volumes (V-E), the apparent molar volumes (V-phi,V-1 and V-phi,V-2), excess isobaric thermal expansion (alpha(E)(p, m)), the isentropic compressibility deviation (Delta kappa(s)) and speed of sound deviation (Delta u) were computed based on these data. These main properties were evaluated according to numerous solute-solvent interactions among the various components in the mixtures for all of the investigated systems. In addition, the properties were fitted by the Redlich-Kister and Hwang equations. Finally, the capability of Prigogine-Flory-Patterson (PFP) theory for reproducing the main experimentally observed properties of the investigated systems containing DESs. The effect of the mixing state of black carbon (BC) on light absorption is of enduring interest due to its close connection to regional/global climate. Herein, we present concurrent measurements of both BC absorption enhancement (E-abs) and the chemical mixing state in southern China. E-abs was obtained by simultaneous measuring the light absorption coefficient using an aethalometer before and after being heated. The observed E-abs was categorized into non- (E-abs <= 1.0), slight (1.0 < E-abs <= 1.2), and higher (E-abs > 1.2) enhancement groups, and it was compared to the mixing state of elemental carbon (EC) particles detected by a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS). The individual EC-containing particles were classified into four types, including EC with sodium and potassium ion peaks (NaK-EC), long EC cluster ions (C-n(+/-), n >= 6) with sulfate (EC-Sul1), short EC cluster ions (C-n(+/-), n < 6) with sulfate (EC-Sul2), and EC with OC and sulfate (ECOC-Sul). NaK-EC and EC-Sul2 are the dominant EC types. Slight enhancement group is mainly explained by the photochemical production of ammonium sulfate and organics on EC-Sul2 during afternoon hours. In contrast, the higher E-abs is primarily attributed to the enhanced mixing of ammonium chloride with NaK-EC during morning hours, without photochemistry. The characterization of source emissions indicates that NaK-EC is likely from coal combustion and is associated with a relatively higher amount of ammonium chloride. Study of Activated Carbon Sheets Used for Air-Cathodes of Portable Quasi-Solid Aluminum-Air Batteries

The air-cathode is investigated for the development and optimization of low-cost, miniaturized, portable, quasi-solid aluminum-air batteries. The battery used aluminum as the anode and gelation sodium chloride as the electrolyte. The air-cathode was activated carbon sheet made of carbon fiber, cellulose, and activated carbon powder. The air-cathode requires a large surface area. Activated carbon (AC) has the property of porosity and large surface area. In this study, this property was utilized for enhancing the performance of the air-cathode. A novel experimental method to determine the critical chloride content in cement-based composites

In reinforced-concrete structural members, the protective passive film on the rebar surface is broken when a critical content of chloride ions (C-crit) is accumulated at the rebar-concrete interface by diffusing through the concrete cover. The value of C-crit is often used for determining maintenance schedules and service life modeling of reinforced-concrete infrastructure. A novel method for accurate determination of C-crit is proposed in this article, which addresses some of the limitations of current practice. For the development of this method, seventeen identical beam specimens, made with reinforced-StrainHardening Cementitious Composite (SHCC), were prepared according to the ASTM G109 procedure. The corrosion activity was monitored using various electrochemical techniques to detect the initiation of corrosion. Immediately after corrosion initiation, each specimen was sectioned to determine the chloride contents at multiple points along the rebar-SHCC interface and to observe the depths of the tiny corrosion pits on the surface of the rebars. We found a linear correlation between the chloride content and the average corrosion pit-depth and determined the C-crit of SHCC as the y-intercept of this linear correlation. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. A two-photon multi-emissive fluorescent probe for discrimination of Cys and Hcy/GSH via an aromatic substitution-rearrangement

Cys (Cysteine), Hcy (homocysteine), and GSH (glutathione) are three important kinds of biothiols, playing crucial roles in the variety of pathological and physiological processes. It is greater challenges to simultaneously identify different biothiols due to their similar molecular structures and chemical characteristics. In this work, we employed a multi-emissive fluorescent probe by sulfonyl benzoxadiazole (SBD) with halogen chloride unit as the interaction site based on aromatic substitution-rearrangement strategy to discriminate Cys and Hcy/GSH. The response of probe 1 to Cys would generate FRET and cause a red-shift of fluorescence emission, while Hcy/GSH only lead to different degrees of fluorescence enhancement owing to PET. The probe showed good selectivity, high sensitivity, and low detection limits to three biothiols (Cys: 0.86 mu M, Hcy: 0.48 mu M and GSH: 0.54 mu M). Such capability of the probe could be demonstrated to successfully quantitatively detect the concentrations of Cys/ Hcy/GSH in human plasmas. In addition, the probe was also successfully applied for imaging biothiols in lysosomes and real-time monitoring GSH changes in living cells through two-photon fluorescence microscopy.

Optimizing the Optoelectronic Properties of Face-On Oriented Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) via Water-Assisted Oxidative Chemical Vapor Deposition

Engineering the texture and nanostructure to improve the electrical conductivity of semicrystalline conjugated polymers must address the rate-limiting step for charge carrier transport. In highly face-on orientation, the charge transport between chains within a crystallite becomes rate-limiting, which is highly sensitive to the pi-pi stacking distance and interchain charge transfer integral. Here, face-on oriented semicrystalline poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) thin films are grown via water-assisted (W-A) oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD). Combining W-A with the volatile oxidant, antimony pentachloride, yields an optimized electrical conductivity of 7520 +/- 240 S cm(-1), a record for PEDOT thin films. Systematic control of pi-pi stacking distance from 3.50 angstrom down to 3.43 angstrom yields an electrical conductivity enhancement of approximate to 1140%. The highest electrical conductivity also corresponds to minimum in Urbach energy of 205 meV, indicating superior morphological order. The figure of merit for transparent conductors, sigma(dc)/sigma(op), reaches a maximum value of 94, which is 1.9x and 6.7x higher than oCVD PEDOT grown without W-A and utilizing vanadium oxytrichloride and iron chloride oxidizing agents, respectively. The W-A oCVD is single-step all-dry process and provides conformal coverage, allowing direct growth on mechanical flexible, rough, and structured surfaces without the need for complex and costly transfer steps.

Enzyme Inhibitory Kinetics and Molecular Docking Studies of Halo-Substituted Mixed Ester/Amide-Based Derivatives as Jack Bean Urease Inhibitors

A series of halo-substituted mixed ester/amide-based analogues 4a-l have been prepared as jack bean urease inhibitor, which showed good to excellent inhibition of enzyme activity. The role of halo-substituted benzoyl moieties and alkyl substituted anilines in urease inhibitory kinetics was also investigated. The alkyl-substituted anilines 1a-b reacted with chloroacetyl chloride to afford intermediates 2a-b, which were then reacted with different halo-substituted benzoic acids 3a-f to prepare the title compounds 4a-l. The chemical structures of final products 4a-l were ascertained by FTIR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and mass spectra. The compound 4b showed remarkable activity with IC(50)1.6 +/- 0.2 nM, better than the standard thiourea having IC(50)472.1 +/- 135.1 nM. The 2-chloro-substituted phenyl ring on one side of compound 4b and 4-isopropyl-substituted benzene on the other side play an essential role in inhibition of urease activity. Lineweaver-Burk plots (kinetics study) indicated about 4b derivative as a mixed type of inhibitor. The virtual screening performed against urease enzyme (PDBID 4H9M) showed that compounds 4b and 4e have binding energies of -7.8 and -7.9 Kcal/mol, respectively. Based upon our results, it was found that derivative 4b is a highly potent urease inhibitor, better than the standard thiourea.
