Nine (C2-18) dialkyl trichloromethylphosphonates (TCMP) were synthesized by the Arbusov reaction from the corresponding trialkyl phosphite and CCl4. The reaction of (EtO)3P and CCl4 using daylight was completed in about 4 hr. However, in the preparation of the higher dialkyl TCMP the mixture of (RO)3P and CCl4 had to be refluxed 8 hr or more. These compounds were effective chelating, antistatic and flame resistant additives in a formulation of poly(vinyl chloride) as well as excellent extreme pressure additives for lubricating oil; especially the dibutyl TCMP which was effective at 0.25%.

Screening tests of insecticidal activity for ∼50 organophosphorus compounds used the sucking insect, green peach aphid, and the chewing insect, tobacco cutworm. The established systemic insecticides were usually highly toxic to the aphid while being less toxic to the cutworm. One of the thiophosphate esters, ((EtO)2P(S)SCH2CO2(CH2)2Cl) was toxic to the cutworm. Five phosphate esters were toxic to both insects. O,O-Di-Me dichlorohydroxyethanephosphonate and its Ac ester, O,O-di-Me trichlorohydroxyethanephosphonate and its Et Me homolog were more toxic to the cutworm than the aphid. The test plant was cabbage and the test chems. were formulated with Me2CO-C6H6-emulsifier 30:30:30% weight/weight Insecticidal activity was indicated by mortality at concentrations of 1000 ppm. or lower.

cf. CA 57, 4529d. A new synthesis of 2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-butadiene was developed, starting from commercially available 2-amino-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol and involving a pyrolysis of an amine oxide as well as the pyrolysis of an ester. Hydroxymethylbutadiene treated with vinyl acetate in the presence of a mercuric oxide-boron trifluoride etherate mixture gave 38% bis(2-butadienylmethyl) acetal. Treatment of the hydroxymethylbutadiene with hexamethylene diisocyanate gave 76% solid bis(2-butadienylmethyl) hexamethylenecarbamate, while treatment with m-xylylene diisocyanate gave 91% solid bis(2-butadienylmethyl) m-xylylenecarbamate.
