This paper demonstrates a selective, mild approach to Ullmann amination of aryl halides to synthesize N-alkylated derivatives of epsilon-caprolactam. The synthetic route involves an in-situ ring-opening of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-8-ene (DBU) followed by concurrent arylation with aryl halides in the presence of copper iodide as a catalyst under ligand-free conditions. This method provides a new entry to a wide variety of epsilon-caprolactam derivatives in good to excellent yields in a single synthetic sequence. Similarly, other bicyclic amidines such as 1, 5-diazabicyclo-[4.3.0]non-5-ene (DBN), and 1,5,7 triazabicyclo[4.4.0] dec-5-ene (TBD) also showed good to very high reactivity. Azepan-2-one, or Caprolactam, is an important synthon in polymer chemistry and has a global demand as it is employed to make Nylon 6 filament, fiber, and plastics.([1]) The global caprolactam market size is expected to expand for the growing textile industry with rising demand for plastics in the construction of automotive, electrical, and electronic sectors. Additionally, technological advancements aimed at improving the cost-effective manufacturing process of caprolactam, to minimize the release of hazardous waste into the environment is of vital necessity. We have explored the effect of a co-existing metal in the ligand-free Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of an aryl chloride, which is promoted by a continuous irradiation type microwave and a palladium nanoparticle catalyst, and found that the co-existing metal affects this reaction due to its absorption ability of microwave energy in the reaction system. We also observed that spiking occurred more frequently in the presence of a co-existing metal.

We have developed a versatile, high-yield synthesis of diarylchloroniums/lambda(3)-chloranes through the reaction of various chloroarenes with readily prepared mesityldiazonium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate under mild conditions. The scope of the reaction is broad, including ArCl, ArBr, and ArI. The diarylchloroniums/lambda(3)-chloranes prepared here show unique reactivity in various respects, enabling intermolecular electrophilic arylation reaction of weak nucleophiles, and chlorane-halogane exchange reaction.

Coking wastewater is a typical industrial wastewater and contains a number of toxic and harmful organic pollutants which threaten human health. However, emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from coking wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is rarely studied. Here, the emission characteristics of VOCs were investigated in a full-scale coking WWTP composed of an anaerobic-oxic-oxic (A-O-1-O-2) treatment system. Furthermore, the potential health risks were assessed in this study. VOC emission rates were estimated at each unit of the coking WWTP and the influencing factors of e missions were discussed. Seventeen VOCs were identified in the air phase by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with Tenax adsorption-thermal desorption method: benzene, toluene, and xylenes were predominant, and the concentration of total VOCs decreased gradually from the raw water tank (857.86 +/- 131.30 mu g m(-3)) to the effluent tank (28.56 +/- 3.96 mu g m(-3)). The total VOC emission rate from all units was 1773.42 g d(-1), corresponding to an annual emission of 0.65 tons year(-1). Since the treatment capacity of this coking WWTP was about 1500 m(3)d(-1), it was estimated that 1.18 g of VOCs are emitted during the treatment of 1 m(3) wastewater. Influencing factors of VOC emission mainly include the background concentration of VOCs in wastewater, operational parameters of the treatment processes, and physicochemical properties of VOCs. The carcinogenic risk of VOCs for workers in this coking WWTP ranged from 3.0 x 10(-5) to 7.8 x 10(-4), which exceeded an acceptable level (1.0 x 10(-6)). The non-carcinogenic risk hazard ratio of benzene exceeded 1, indicating that benzene has an obvious non-carcinogenic risk. Understanding VOCs emission characteristic and emission rates can help to identify the adverse effects of coking WWTPs on human health and provide relevant information for policy-making. Vitamin B-6-Pd(II) immobilized onto magnetic nanoparticles have been successfully prepared and applied for C-Xcross-coupling reactions with aryl halides in green deep eutectic solvents. The results prove that the Fe3O4@vitamin B-6-Pd(II) magnetic nanoparticles show high catalyst activity and good stability. It was also revealed that this complex can be recycled up to five times without any significant loss in catalytic activity.

Developing efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for organic reactions in water is important for the sustainable development of chemical industry. In this work, Pd nanoparticles supported on DABCO-functionalized porous organic polymer was successfully prepared through an easy copolymerization and successive immobilization method. Characterization results indicated that the prepared catalyst featured big surface area, hierarchical porous structure, and excellent surface amphiphilicity. We demonstrated the use of this amphiphilic catalyst in two case reactions, i.e. the aqueous hydrodechlorination and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. Under mild reaction conditions, the catalyst showed high catalytic activities for the two reactions. In addition, the catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for several times. Also, no obvious Pd leaching and aggregation of Pd nanoparticles occurred up during the consecutive reactions.

A series of core-shell Co-MOF-74@Mn-MOF-74 samples with different shell thicknesses were prepared by the seed growth method, which were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The shell thickness of these MOF samples were successfully controlled by adjusting the mass ratio between MnCl2 center dot 4H(2)O and Co-MOF-74. On this basis, these MOFs were applied to the catalytic oxidation of toluene. The results showed that with the growth of Mn-MOF-74 in the outer layer of Co-MOF-74, the oxidative selectivity of the substrate to benzaldehyde was greatly improved for the synergy between the core layer and shell layer. The conversion of toluene was 22.4%, and the selectivity of benzaldehyde was 98.1%. In addition, the catalyst can transform various substituted toluene into the corresponding aldehydes in highly selectivity and still keep good stability after four catalytic cycles. The selectivity of the corresponding aldehyde is generally above 80%.
