A series of 4-membered azametallacycles have been prepared by the oxidative addition of Ni(0) with aziridines. Stoichiometric 13C-labeled carbon monoxide could be efficiently incorporated via Ni-C bond insertion to generate air stable and isolable cyclic Ni-acyl complexes. Upon subjection to a range of C-, N-, O-, and S-nucleophiles, 13C-labeled β-amino acids and derivatives thereof, as well as β-aminoketones, could be rapidly accessed. The methodol. proved highly adaptable for the synthesis of the antidiabetic drug, sitagliptin, with a single carbon isotope label.

Antiwear additives with high thermal adsorption properties, such as CCl3(CH2)6PO(OEt)2 [53280-04-9] were effective for friction at low contact loads and low sliding rates. Others, such as CCl3PO(OEt)2 [866-23-9], PhPO(OCH2CCl3)2 [18255-20-4], and CCl3PO(OBu)2 [5887-93-4], forming strong superficial films, were effective for high sp. loads and high velocities. The additive CCl3C6H4PO(OEt)2 [28652-49-5], had simultaneously high thermal adsorption and gave strong films. The higher the work function of the metal electron, the higher was the efficiency of the additive. The esters of phosphonic acids, with or without Cl and having low chem. activity for a metal, were ineffective antiwear additives.

A study of the effects of phosphonic acid esters on frictional wear under diverse loads and sliding speeds indicated that the efficiency of such phosphonates (I) as antiwear additives depends on their structure and varies with the frictional modes. Principal I were grouped as esters which are ineffective under both high and low loads (esters with no Cl atoms); esters effective under both high and low loads (CCl3-group containing esters); and esters effective under high or low loads. The interaction of I with steel has been studied. Dissimilarity in the efficiency of esters as lubricating oil additives is explained by their different adsorption and chem. actions.

A fluorinated and a non-fluorinated axially chiral 1,8-diarylnaphthalene ligand have been synthesized through an Ullmann and Suzuki coupling reaction based strategy. A practical methodol. for the successful chiral resolution of the newly synthesized catechol based moiety is presented. The authors also disclose the preliminary application of these axially chiral mols. as ligands in asym. transformation reactions. The synthesis of the target compounds was achieved by a reaction of 1,8-diiodonaphthalene with 1,2,3,4,5-pentafluoro-6-(iodo)benzene and formation of 1-iodo-8-(pentafluorophenyl)naphthalene. A Suzuki coupling of this aryl iodide with (2,3,6-trimethoxyphenyl)boronic acid gave a biaryl which was deprotected and resolved to deliver axially chiral biaryls 4-methoxy-3-[(1S)-8-(pentafluorophenyl)-1-naphthalenyl]-1,2-benzenediol and 4-methoxy-3-[(1R)-8-(pentafluorophenyl)-1-naphthalenyl]-1,2-benzenediol which was transformed into chiral titanium complexes.

The synthesis of fused imidazolidines, e.g., I (x-ray single crystal structure shown), via two N-C bond-forming sequences has been developed. The transformation goes through a (3 + 2)-cycloaddition reaction in the presence of catalytic amounts of palladium by combining several vinyl aziridines and cyclic N-sulfonyl imines. Interestingly, the use of LiCl as additive allowed the improvement of diastereoselectivities when less encumbered substrates were used. The imidazolidine derivatives that bear aminal cores are isolated in high yields (15 examples, up to 96% yield) and diastereoselectivities (up to >20:1).

A simple and sensitive sequential injection spectrophotometric procedure is proposed for the determination of trace amounts of iodide in pharmaceutical preparations The method was based on the catalytic effect of iodide on the (tetra base) 4,4′-methylene bis(N,N-dimethylaniline)chloramine-T reaction in acidic solution The method involves a sequential aspiration of 255 μl sample/standard followed by 170 μl tetra base and then 128 μl chloramine-T solutions into a carrier stream to be stacked inside a holding coil and flow reversed through a reaction coil towards a detector. The resulting colored compound was measured at 600 nm using an UV/Vis-spectrophotometer. All the parameters that affected the reaction were evaluated and the calibration curve was linear over a range of 0.1-6.0 μg l-1 of iodide concentration with detection limit of 0.05 μg l-1. A sample throughput of 80 samples per h and relative standard deviation of less than 2.0% was achieved. The method was successfully applied for the determination of iodide in three different samples (tablets).
